Yemen: Al-Qaida offers bounty for U.S. ambassador

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen has announced that it will pay tens of thousands of dollars to anyone who kills the U.S. ambassador in Sanaa or an American soldier in the country.

An audio produced by the group's media arm, the al-Malahem Foundation, and posted on militant websites Saturday said it offered three kilograms of gold, worth $160,000, for killing the ambassador.

The group said it will pay 5 million Yemeni riyals ($23,000) to anyone who kills an American soldier inside Yemen.

It did not say how the bounty could be collected, but said the offer is valid for six months.

The bounties were set to "inspire and encourage our Muslim nation for jihad," the statement said.

Washington considers al-Qaida in Yemen to be the group's most dangerous branch.

Snowstorm disrupts hundreds of Northeast flights

A fast-moving storm heads to New England where it is predicted to dump 6-10 inches of snow overnight into Sunday morning. The Weather Channel's Julie Martin reports.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

Several hundred flights were canceled and several thousand delayed by midday Saturday as a storm moved into the Northeast that's expected to dump several inches of snow on big cities and up to a foot in other areas.

Most of the flight disruptions were at the Boston and New York area airports, according to the tracker service FlightStats.com. By 4:25 p.m. ET, it had counted 446 flights canceled so far Saturday across the country, and nearly 5,600 delayed.

New York City could see 3 to 5 inches, as well as hazardous driving conditions from the short-lived storm, NBCNewYork.com reported.

The brunt of the storm was likely to hit southern New England, according to NBC meteorologist Dylan Dreyer. "It's from Boston back into Rhode Island where we'll see the heaviest of the snow," she said on TODAY.

Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Seidel, speaking on MSNBC, called the storm a "quick hitter" that nonetheless was having an impact on air travel before it clears out Saturday night.

The Weather Channel's Mike Seidel has more on what residents in the Northeast can expect to see as a winter weather system moves through the region.

A Love Letter To Dallas | Thought Catalog

This is my love letter to Dallas and it might be the first and only one ever written because nobody writes love letters for Dallas. We save those for the romantic cities (Paris, New York, San Francisco), save those for the poetic cities, the cities that claw at our small-town dreams and beckon to us, the cities that promise streets full of art, cities that plume turquoise and tangerine and neon, cities that people write movie scripts about. But I do not come from those cities and though I have dreams about them like everyone has dreams about them, I am from Dallas, TX, the big D, the dirty D, a city lodged into the north of the state with shitty public transportation and a bad rep for not being as hip as its stepbrother, Austin. This is where my roots begin and even as they now stretch messily along the east coast and have sent me swerving throughout the country and abroad, all of the stories for the rest of my life will begin in Dallas, my home, a city that is sometimes bruised and sometimes ugly and sometimes a little bit of both.

Because Dallas is a messy and complicated city. Here, you?ll find some of the wealthiest people you?ll ever meet in areas like Midtown and Preston Hollow (wuddup, Bush) and some of the poorest in neighborhoods in the south of the city. This is a land dominated by bouji suburbs in the north where new money suits from communications and banking industries collided and made families with busty blondes who stain the air with hairspray and the carbon run-offs of their large SUVs, all burrowing into intoxicatingly large homes in Plano and Frisco. Then of course the artists (because we have those too) and the gays who stuff themselves into small strips of land in Deep Ellum and Oak Lawn. And all the people who fit none of these categories who live in small apartments in Oak Cliff or moderate two-storied homes in Carrollton Farmer?s Branch or Uptown, the people who go to local farmer?s markets and live small, quiet, content lives who see Dallas as simply their street, their neighborhood. We live like the cracked pieces of glass in a kaleidoscope, swirling and churning into compelling bursts of color, pointed decidedly toward the sun.

However, for all of the diversity of life and experience that you?ll find in Dallas, we?re still often reduced to nothing more than a passing joke. To mockery, caricature. Pop culture has crafted our city into something worth dramatizing (in shows like the infamous Dallas and the less than wonderful Good Christian Bitches), something worth laughing at, this land of dust and hairspray and southern drawls and lands stitched together by rolling highways. But even as we are these things, we are so much more. We hold steadfast to tradition. We believe fiercely in good manners and call everyone Sir or Ma?am and hold open doors for people and always say Thank You. We believe in helping one?s neighbor. We don?t understand what filters are and have never thought of not speaking our minds or telling people exactly how we feel. We are right wing and left wing, radical and conservative and don?t need political pollsters painting our city red or blue because we are the descendents of rugged pioneers, of men and women with weathered hands and spirits who stumbled upon a river in the north of Texas and decided to make something of this place.

And they did. For all the ways in which this city fails, it constantly surprises me with the ways in which it succeeds. This is a place of hidden gems, with vibrant minds working toward making a difference. And even though there will never be a show like Girls that will use Dallas as a backdrop for its struggling 20something protagonists and it will never inspire schools of poetry and there will never be songs about leaving hearts and souls in Dallas, it will be a city that will continue to survive and produce intelligent and caring people who will have big feelings and opinions about everything ranging from the color of your Mama?s new dress to discussions of secession and education reform and fighting for marriage equality. I guess at the end of the day, the way I feel about my hometown is the way everyone everywhere feels about their hometowns: I can talk as much shit about it as I want, but as soon as anybody not from Dallas says anything negative about the city, you best believe that I?m gonna get real Texas all over their ass real quick. Because despite what anyone not from Dallas might say (myself often included), this is a city worth having pride in, a city worth something, a city that anyone should be happy to call home. TC mark

Students' online and offline social networks can predict course grades

Dec. 27, 2012 ? Ben-Gurion University of the Negev's (BGU) Social Networks Security Research Group in its Department of Information Systems Engineering has developed a novel method to predict how well or badly a student will perform in an academic course.

The information can be used to determine which students need the most help, as well as which ones excel and might be guided to further study or careers in that subject area. The paper, "Predicting Student Exam Scores by Analyzing Social Network Data," was presented earlier this month at the Advanced Media Technology Conference in Macau, Hong Kong.

According to co-author and Ph.D. student Michael Fire, "While most papers about social network analysis deal solely with information gathered online, this study draws some of the information from the real world -- social interactions which were conducted off the grid."

The researchers analyzed data from a BGU course that included assignments submitted online and Web site logs (containing 10,759 entries) to construct social networks of explicit and implicit cooperation among the students. The implicit connections are used to model all the social interactions that happened "offline" among the students: e-mails with questions, conversations in the lab while preparing the assignments and even course forums.

"These connections were very important, as we sought to model the social interactions within the student body," Fire explains.

In addition to analyzing the online submissions of the students who had to work in pairs or in groups, they also tracked login time and computer usage. For instance, if two students submitted their assignments from the same computer, it was a likely indication that the two had worked together to complete the assignment. If two students submitted assignments from different computers, but one right after the other on more than one occasion, the authors gave a value to that data, as well.

"One explanation for what we discovered is that your friends influence your grade in the course, so, if you pick your friends well, then you will get a higher grade," Fire says. "Alternatively, social networks in courses offer conditions whereby good students will pair with other good students, and similarly weaker ones will pair with weaker students."

Winter storm whips into Northeast

A powerful winter storm system that pounded the nation's midsection, wrecking holiday travel plans and dumping a record snowfall in Arkansas, began lashing the Northeast on Wednesday with high winds, snow and sleet.

The storm, which knocked out power to thousands of utility customersm mainly in Arkansas, was blamed in at least six deaths.

Hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed, scores of motorists got stuck on icy roads or slid into drifts and blizzard warnings were issued amid snowy gusts of 30 mph that blanketed roads and windshields, at times causing whiteout conditions.

"The way I've been describing it is as a low-end blizzard, but that's sort of like saying a small Tyrannosaurus rex," said John Kwiatkowski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

The system, which spawned Gulf Coast region tornadoes on Christmas Day, pushed through the Upper Ohio Valley and headed into the Northeast Wednesday night. High winds, snow and sleet slickened roads in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, causing dozens of minor accidents and spinouts. Forecasts called for 12 to 18 inches of snow inland from western New York to Maine into Thursday.

The National Weather Service said early Thursday that snow was falling heavily in Pennsylvania, upstate New York and some New England states. Among the highest snow totals were 2 to five inches in southeastern Massachusetts, 3 to 6 inches in Connecticut, up to a foot in some Pennsylvania counties and 10 to 11 inches in some parts of western New York.

The system was expected to taper off into a mix of rain and snow closer to the coast, where little or no accumulation was expected in such cities as Philadelphia, Boston and New York.

The storm left freezing temperatures in its aftermath, and forecasters also said parts of the Southeast from Virginia to Florida would see severe thunderstorms.

Schools on break and workers taking holiday vacations meant that many people could avoid messy commutes, but those who had to travel were implored to avoid it. Snow was blamed for scores of vehicle accidents as far east as Maryland, and about two dozen counties in Indiana and Ohio issued snow emergency travel alerts, urging people to go out on the roads only if necessary.

About 40 vehicles got bogged down trying to make it up a slick hill in central Indiana, and four state snowplows slid off roads as snow fell at the rate of 3 inches an hour in some places.

Two passengers in a car on a sleet-slickened Arkansas highway were killed Wednesday in a head-on collision, and two people, including a 76-year-old Milwaukee woman, were killed Tuesday on Oklahoma highways. Deaths from wind-toppled trees were reported in Texas and Louisiana.

The day after Christmas wasn't expected to be particularly busy for AAA, but its Cincinnati-area branch had its busiest Wednesday of the year. By mid-afternoon, nearly 400 members had been helped with tows, jump starts and other aid, with calls still coming in, spokesman Mike Mills said.

Jennifer Miller was taking a bus Wednesday from Cincinnati to visit family in Columbus.

"I wish this had come yesterday and was gone today," she said, struggling with a rolling suitcase and three smaller bags on a slushy sidewalk near the station. "I'm glad I don't have to drive in this."

Traffic crawled at 25 mph on Interstate 81 in Maryland, where authorities reported scores of accidents.

"We're going to try to go down south and get below" the storm, said Richard Power, traveling from home in Levittown, N.Y., to Kentucky with his wife, two children and their beagle, Lucky.

He said they were well on their way until they hit snow in Pennsylvania, then 15-mph traffic on I-81 at Hagerstown, Md.

"We're going to go as far as we can go. ... If it doesn't get better, we're going to just get a hotel," he said.

More than 1,600 flights were canceled, according to the aviation tracking website FlightAware.com, and some airlines said they would waive change fees. Lengthy delays were reported Wednesday at the three major New York City-area airports, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

In Arkansas, some of the nearly 200,000 people who lost power could be without it for as long as a week because of snapped poles and wires after ice and 10 inches of snow coated power lines, said the state's largest utility, Entergy Arkansas.

Gov. Mike Beebe, who declared a statewide emergency, sent out National Guard teams, and Humvees transported medical workers and patients. Snow hadn't fallen in Little Rock on Christmas since 1926, but the capital ended Tuesday with 10.3 inches of it.

Other states also had scattered outages. Duke Energy said it had nearly 300 outages in Indiana, with few left in Ohio by early afternoon after scores were reported in the morning.

As the storm moved east, New England state highway departments were treating roads and getting ready to mobilize with snowfall forecasts of a foot or more.

"People are picking up salt and a lot of shovels today," said Andy Greenwood, an assistant manager at Aubuchon Hardware in Keene, N.H.

As usual, winter-sports enthusiasts welcomed the snow. At Smiling Hill Farm in Maine, Warren Knight was hoping for enough snow to allow the opening of trails.

"We watch the weather more carefully for cross-country skiing than we do for farming. And we're pretty diligent about farming. We're glued to the weather radio," said Knight, who described the weather at the 500-acre farm in Westbrook as being akin to the prizes in "Cracker Jacks ? we don't know what we're going to get."

Behind the storm, Mississippi's governor declared states of emergency in eight counties with more than 25 people reported injured and 70 homes left damaged.

Cindy Williams stood near a home in McNeill, Miss., where its front had collapsed into a pile of wood and brick, a balcony and the porch ripped apart. Large oak trees were uprooted and winds sheared off treetops in a nearby grove. But she focused instead on the fact that all her family members had escaped harm.

"We are so thankful," she said. "God took care of us."

Blog Home Improvement Ideas Factors to Think about Your House ...

Household security is an increasingly essential problem for numerous individuals. New threats against your Household appear to emerge each day. The newest tricks from revolutionary thieves and burglars consist of watching your social media postings to figure out when you go to perform or leave for holiday. There are quite a few Causes to install a security program in your House in the face of this rising menace. Here are ten of the most motivating.

ten Causes for Security At Residence

one particular. Interviews with captured burglars have revealed a shocking insight into their psychology. It turns out that just the sight of an alarm method will turn practically 80% of these criminals away. They choose much less threat in their targets. They do not even bother to test the program in most circumstances. The least expensive method that you get may possibly be a lot far more productive than you believe as extended as criminals can see it.

two. You can also include quite a few alarm systems with fire alarm systems. This generates added security due to the fact your alarm will not only wake you up, it will also send a message to fire authorities instantaneously.

three. With a Property security technique in spot, you do not have to be concerned about calling the police when an intruder is detected. You can concentrate on your instant Security and that of your household even though the laptop or computer calls for the police.

four. A light sleeper can hear a window break or a door all of a sudden open, but only a security method with motion detectors can place a person lurking outdoors your Household whilst you sleep. Lights that automatically turn on when the criminal tactic can deter them from even thinking about your Household as a target.

five. You will sleep much easier figuring out that you are secure by your program. Tiny is worse than attempting to sleep although you are worried about your personal Security and that of your household. With a excellent Residence security set-up in location, you will sleep like a rock being aware of that there is nothing at all to be concerned about.

six. You may possibly feel that you are ready adequate for any thief and have no purpose for a security technique. On the other hand, obtaining a gun will not cease an intruder from terrorizing Tiny young children through such an occasion. If you have Tiny young children in the Home, get the security method to avert them from ever experiencing any sort of close encounter.

7. The lights that illuminate the surroundings of your Residence in response to intruders will also brighten up the complete neighborhood. Just possessing one particular Property with a good quality method in location will make the complete neighborhood much more peaceful.

8. You could be in a position to get discounts in Residence insurance coverage if you have a security program.

9. Numerous systems come with remote controls. You can activate and deactivate the security protocols without having even going to your Household. This permits you to preserve your Residence protected when you are away but you can also let pals and family members in devoid of generating a trip back Property.

ten. Some security corporations will include things like a guarantee against theft. If somebody does handle to get previous your technique, they will spend for whatever has been lost.

Motorola Defy XT (Republic Wireless)

Republic Wireless has a great idea, but it isn't followed up with a great phone. The new wireless carrier wants us to rely on Wi-Fi for our phone calls, and it's willing to offer unlimited data usage for only $19 per month. That's awesome! Unfortunately, it's hung its hat on a single slow, unsatisfying phone with wobbly call quality. We love Republic's plans, but we can't recommend this device.

For the uninitiated, Republic Wireless is a new carrier which uses Sprint's 3G network, but which also assumes its users will do most of their calling on Wi-Fi at their home and workplace. The carrier has been in "beta" for months, recently opening up subscriptions to the public. You can check out our recent interview with Republic's CEO and our review of the carrier's previous phone, the LG Optimus S.

The Motorola Defy XT
At the moment, the Motorola Defy XT is Republic's only phone. Alex Colon reviewed this rugged Android phone in its U.S. Cellular incarnation earlier this year and gave it 2.5 stars for its short battery life and other issues. Read his review for a quick rundown of the phone. The slideshow below is from his review of the U.S. Cellular model; this model has the same hardware.

I'll add some more complaints to Alex's list. While the 3.7-inch, 800-by-480 screen is sharp, everything's sluggish. Downloads are sluggish. Screen transitions are sluggish. Even the dialer is sluggish. Benchmarks show this version of the Defy XT as slightly faster than U.S. Cellular's, but still in the pack of entry-level smartphones and with unusually slow graphics performance (which explains those slow screen transitions.)

Android 2.3.7 is now three full generations behind what Google is putting out as "current," lacking lots of fancy features like Android 4.0's updated interface, Android 4.1's "Google Now" smart search, and Android 4.2's multiple user capabilities. And no, the Defy XT isn't getting an upgrade. Ever.

The Defy XT is limited to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and in crowded wireless areas, when combined with the XT's slow single-core 1GHz processor and old 2.3.7 version of Android, that means slow connections: I got 3-4Mbps down on Speedtest.net on a network with more than 30Mbps backhaul. Newer handsets feature 5GHz Wi-Fi, which I've found to be three times as fast here at PCMag. When Republic is saying "use Wi-Fi a lot!" you want a handset with impeccable Wi-Fi performance, and this isn't it.

When you turn on the XT, it asks you to connect to a Wi-Fi network. When you're connected to Wi-Fi, a green icon appears in your status bar showing that Wi-Fi calling is available. When you make a call, the screen shows whether that call is over Wi-Fi or cellular.

There are some confusing aspects of the UI here, though. The home screen has a tip on it that says "Connect to Wi-Fi networks in Settings to enable Wi-Fi calling." That stays up whether or not you're connected, making it unclear whether this is something you need to do, or something you've already done.

The phone doesn't make it unusually easy to hook up to hotspots, either. That'll come next year when Republic starts integrating Devicescape's Wi-Fi client, which automatically senses and attaches to public Wi-Fi hotspots. That'll be a big deal, and a big help.

Calls made over Wi-Fi also had some annoying audio artifacts that I didn't hear when the phone was using Sprint's 3G network. The edges of words were very noticeably clipped; I also heard some occasional pops and dropouts. The speakerphone, meanwhile, is so quiet as to be basically useless.

There's currently no way to hand off calls between Wi-Fi and cellular. If you're on a Wi-Fi call and leave the hotspot, the call drops. If you're on a cellular call and enter a Wi-Fi hotspot, it stays on cellular.

Wi-Fi calls appeared to use a little more battery than cellular calls. We got 4 hours, 40 minutes of cellular talk time on the previous Defy XT model (which was using Sprint's network at the time); I got 3 hours, 58 minutes of Wi-Fi talk time on this unit. Neither result is terrific.

Great Plans, Poor Phone
All this disappointment is extra-disappointing because Republic is thinking out of the box with its service plans. Republic charges $249 up-front for its phone, plus a $10 activation fee, and then $19/month for unlimited use. The company's CEO said that Republic's business model will only work if people spend most of their time on Wi-Fi, but it won't penalize anyone for using "too much" cellular.?

Republic says it's hamstrung by trying to offer a phone at an affordable prepaid price, but we know of several better ones: MetroPCS's $149 LG Motion 4G ?and Virgin's $149 HTC EVO V 4G ?are both superior, for instance. Yes, most of the smartphones on prepaid carriers are still kicking around with slow processors and ancient versions of Android, but you don't have to settle.

We suggest keeping a close eye on Republic Wireless. The company has a great idea, and it promises more features and more phones in 2013. But it takes hardware, software, and a service to make a great wireless solution. Republic has the service; now it needs to find a phone worthy of it.

RIM loses BlackBerry subscribers for first time

(AP) ? BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion, which is already struggling with plunging sales, said Thursday it lost subscribers for the first time in the latest quarter, as the global number of BlackBerry users dipped to 79 million and the stock plunged in after hours after the company said it will change the way it shares revenue with carriers.

The Canadian company did add to its cash position as it prepares to launch new smartphones on Jan. 30 that are deemed critical to the company's survival. RIM's stock initially jumped more than 8 percent in after-hours trading on that news, but then fell $1.48, or 10.4 percent, to $12.65 after RIM said on a conference call that it won't generate as much revenue from telecommunications carriers once it releases the new BlackBerry 10 platform.

RIM is changing the way it?charges service fees, putting an important source of revenue at risk. RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said only subscribers who want enhanced security will pay fees under the new system.

"Other subscribers who do not utilize such services are expected to generate less or no service revenue," Heins said. "The mix in level of service fees revenue will change going forward and will be under pressure over the next year during this transition."

RIM's stock had been on a three-month rally that has seen the stock more than double from its lowest level since 2003.

But Mike Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity, said BlackBerry 10 will change RIM's services revenue model dramatically. He said that instead of getting about $6 per device each month from carriers and users RIM could get as little as zero.

"That's what turned the stock from being up 10 percent to being down 10 percent," Walkley said. "That's been part of our worry. How do they come back with a new platform and get carriers to continue to share the higher revenue ?which sounds like they are not going to? and then subsidize the phone to make it affordable for consumers and enterprises."

"People are seeing that the services revenue has a lot of risk to it now with the BlackBerry 10 migration."

Three months ago, RIM had 80 million subscribers. Analysts said the loss of 1 million subscribers was expected. Once coveted symbols of an always-connected lifestyle, BlackBerry phones have lost their luster to Apple's iPhone and phones that run on Google's Android software.

RIM is banking its future on its much-delayed BlackBerry 10 platform, which is meant to offer the multimedia, Internet browsing and apps experience that customers now demand.

"We believe the company has stabilized and will turn the corner in the next year," Heins said. He noted that the company's cash holdings grew by $600 million in the quarter to $2.9 billion, even after the funding of all its restructuring costs. RIM previously announced 5,000 layoffs this year.

Heins said subscribers in North America showed the largest decline, but said there is growth overseas.

Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Financial, said before the conference call that the company bought itself more time.

"It doesn't mean (BlackBerry) 10 will gain traction. A lot of people said 10 would be DOA, but I don't think that's going to be the case," he said.

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek also earlier called the results better than expected, noting that RIM added a significant amount of cash. RIM will need the money to advertise the new BlackBerrys and operating system.

Misek also called it a positive development that RIM said there would not be another delay to BlackBerry 10.

"The success or failure of this company will be on BlackBerry 10," Misek said.

RIM posted net income of $14 million, or 3 cents per share for its fiscal third quarter, which ended Dec. 1. That compares with a profit of $265 million, or 51 cents per share, in the same quarter a year ago.

The latest figure includes a favorable tax settlement. Excluding that adjustment, RIM lost 22 cents per share. Analysts polled by FactSet were expecting a wider loss of 27 cents.

RIM reported revenue of $2.7 billion, down 47 percent from a year ago.

Consumers Energy Wants To Spend $750 Million To Build Natural Gas Power Plant

JACKSON - Consumers Energy wants to spend $750 million to build a 700 megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in Thetford Township, about 20 miles northwest of Flint. The project is expected to create about 600 construction jobs. The bulk of the construction jobs are expected to be filled by members of skilled trades unions. When completed, the proposed power plant also would create an estimated 30 operating jobs. Consumers Energy owns the 272-acre Thetford Township site, which features access to high-volume natural gas delivery and high-voltage power transmission lines. The site already is home to nine smaller natural-gas fired combustion turbine units. The current project schedule calls for construction to begin in 2015 and for the new combined cycle power plant to begin serving Consumers Energy's electric customers in 2017. At 700 megawatts, the proposed plant would be able to serve a community of about 445,000. Development of the power plant is contingent upon the company obtaining an air permit from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, a certificate of necessity from the Michigan Public Service Commission and suitable financing. Consumers Energy file an air permit application Monday with the MDEQ. The application will be for a permit that covers two combined cycle units at the Thetford site, supporting the company's option to develop a second unit at a later date. The MDEQ will set the schedule for its review of the permit application. The company expects to file a certificate of necessity application with the MPSC in 2013. John Russell, the president and chief executive officer of Consumers Energy, said the estimated $750 million investment in the proposed plant would be in addition to the $6.5 billion that the company previously announced that it planned to invest in its utility operations through 2017. Russell also said that Michigan's 2008 energy law put a comprehensive energy policy in place that gives Consumers Energy and other utilities the financial certainty and regulatory structure that they need to make major investments that create jobs and boost the state's economy.

Beverly Macy: Here's Why the new Twitter Nielsen TV Matters

Social Media is growing up. We're seeing that the power of social media marches on in business, entertainment, sports, government and education, and is becoming more entrenched in internal business processes as well as outward communications.

Today sees the announcement of the new Twitter Nielsen TV Ratings, just in time for the Fall 2013 season.

Here's a critical phrase from the announcement: " ....Nielsen and Twitter will deliver a syndicated-standard metric around the reach of the TV conversation."

This is brilliant because much of what's lacking as social media grows up is the ability to measure and analyze the massive big data beneath the social firehose. Good analytics starts with standards.

It's interesting that Twitter has gone from goat to hero in a few short years. It wasn't long ago that Twitter was dismissed as frivolous, with people saying, "Who cares what you ate for dinner?" Now it's a key player in TV Ratings 2.0.

SocialTV viewing is the new campfire experience -- the you-are-not-alone experience. It is the gravitational center that has the power to pull in 20, 30 or 100 million viewers to a single TV experience. Whether it's Homeland, Sons of Anarchy, the Oscars, or mourning current events, people want to be connected by contributing to the story in real-time.

These real-time TV experiences can and do affect ratings. After all, there's a $90+ billion pot of advertising gold at the end of the TV rainbow that tech companies, social media firms, TV hardware companies, mobile carriers, and everyone else under the sun would like to get their hands on.

It's an open field for the competition to harness this new market demand, and it looks like Twitter is staking its claim on a portion of the pot of advertising gold.

Beverly Macy teaches social media and global marketing and branding at the UCLA Extension. She runs Gravity Summit and advises Fortune 500 companies on real-time social media. She is the co-author of best-seller The Power of Real-Time Social Media Marketing. The book is used in over 20 universities and corporations as a guide to social media. Investigation into Chiefs LB killing complete

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher apparently was worried he would lose his baby and money to his longtime girlfriend before fatally shooting her and killing himself, according to newly released police reports.

Belcher also complained about Kasandra Perkins, the mother of the couple's 3-month-old daughter, in conversations and text messages sent to a woman he was dating on the side, the reports show.

In one text message sent in late October or early November, Belcher wrote he "would shoot" Perkins "if she didn't leave him alone." The girlfriend told police that Belcher said "his child's mother threatened to take all his money and his child if they split up" and "knew exactly how to press his buttons and make him angry."

Belcher shot Perkins multiple times in their home on Dec. 1 and then drove to team headquarters, where he killed himself in front of his coach and general manager after telling them he "wasn't able to get enough help."

The Jackson County prosecutor's office reviewed the police reports, which first were obtained by The Kansas City Star, before closing the case Friday. It formally ruled the deaths of Belcher, 25, and Perkins, 22, a murder-suicide, prosecutor's office spokesman Mike Mansur said Tuesday.

The reports provide new details about the final days and hours leading to the tragedy.

The night before the killings, Belcher went to a club with the woman he was dating while Perkins attended a concert with her friends, the reports said. A friend of Perkins has told The Star that the couple argued around 1 a.m., about Perkins being out late, although it wasn't clear whether the argument happened in person or on the phone. The police report, which doesn't mention this dispute, said that after Belcher kissed his girlfriend and she went inside her apartment, he fell asleep in his car.

About two hours later, police roused Belcher after someone called 911 to report his idling Bentley as suspicious. The report said Belcher was legally parked and didn't smell of alcohol, but officers asked if he could stay inside the apartment for the night.

Belcher tried to call the girlfriend, but she didn't discover the missed calls until the next morning and didn't hear him at her door. Two women who were up late invited Belcher to wait inside their apartment after he explained his plight. They said Belcher "appeared to be intoxicated" but "seemed to be in good spirits . laughing, joking."

After taking him to a gas station to buy a sports drink, they gave him a pillow and blanket and he slept on the couch for a couple hours, leaving at 6:45 a.m. so he could make it to a team meeting planned for later that morning.

Upon arriving at the home he shared with Perkins, the couple began arguing over "one or both of them going out as in to a club or partying," said Belcher's mother, Cheryl Shepherd, who had moved in with them about two weeks earlier.

When Shepherd heard multiple gunshots, she ran to the bedroom and saw Belcher kneeling next to Perkins' body, saying he was sorry. After kissing Perkins, his baby daughter and his mother, Belcher drove to Arrowhead Stadium, breaking off his Bentley's rear-view mirror on the way, the police report said.

Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli saw Belcher holding a gun to his head and jumped out of his vehicle so he could find out what was happening.

"I've done a bad thing to my girlfriend already," Belcher told Pioli, according to the report, adding that he wanted to talk with Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel and defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs.

When Crennel arrived, Belcher said, "You know that I've been having some major problems at home and with my girlfriend. I need help! I wasn't able to get enough help. I appreciate everything you all have done for me with trying to help ... but it wasn't enough. I have hurt my girl already and I can't go back now."

Belcher asked that Pioli and team owner Clark Hunt take care of his daughter. The Chiefs staff pleaded with Belcher to put down his gun, but he only lowered it to load a round. "You're taking the easy way out!" Crennel told Belcher, according to the report.

As a police officer approached, Belcher knelt behind a vehicle, saying, "Guys, I have to do this. ... I got to go, can't be here and take care of my daughter." He made the sign of the cross on his chest and fired a bullet into his head, the report said.

Crennel said Belcher had blamed Perkins for missing a team meeting a few weeks earlier, saying he had to watch the baby after Perkins didn't come home the night before. Crennel said he thought the couple had "trust issues" and Perkins expected "a better life" with an NFL player.

Crennel said Belcher, whose base salary this season was more than $1.9 million, "didn't live outside his means." He said he thought Belcher was talking to an attorney about getting custody of his daughter.

Shepherd, Belcher's mother, attributed the couple's relationship problems to "financial issues associated with Perkins' spending habits."

Dave Schilling: Disposing Sex

All human activities produce waste. When one drives an automobile, carbon monoxide is expelled. After eating a meal, a person tends to create what most reputable scientists refer to as "shit." Sexual relations are not exempt from this rule. A male orgasm produces semen, which for a large swath of the population is a sticky afterthought of the encounter.

In theory, semen is the nectar of life, but sex is routinely enjoyed for reasons outside of procreation. Loneliness, fear of mortality and boredom are the real impetuses for copulating. That renders "cum" the sad, moist leftover that reminds someone that they have to go back to being depressed after 15 minutes of escape.

Condoms allow for folks to not only avoid pregnancy and disease, but also to have a great place to store semen. Unfortunately, that's not the end of the problem. The condom then has to be stashed somewhere. There are a variety of options for ditching the evidence of a sexual dalliance, but each and every one of them carries a myriad of other unforeseen complications.

Throwing it in the trash

One would assume that once a condom is in the garbage, it is taken care of. No one has to see it, touch it or interact with it in any way. That ignores the simple truth that a trashcan has to be opened in order for more garbage to be thrown out. Unless one lives alone, which is becoming more and more rare in today's shoddy economy, it's highly likely that a non-participant or neutral party will have a gander at the filthy leavings of a torrid fuck session. If throwing a condom in the wastebasket is the only option at a person's disposal, then I advise wrapping said rubber in a wad of toilet paper or placing it inside a cereal box. Please be aware that the cereal box should be empty and in the trash. A full cereal box inside the pantry is not a proper place to put one's semen. On the other hand, if there is unspoken tension between roommates, then putting semen in a cereal box is a great, passive-aggressive way to get a point across.

Flinging it out the window

The benefit of the Window Method is that the condom no longer resides in one's domicile. It could end up in a tree, on the sidewalk, or on the head of a passer-by. It is truly "out of sight, out of mind." A child could hypothetically discover the condom and think it is some sort of toy, which could be great if the child is from a poor family and can't afford Furbys or whatever is popular with youngsters these days. Conversely, the child could be rich and it could end up being the first step toward a deviant, Patrick Bateman-style lifestyle. There's a 50/50 chance here, so use discretion.

Under the bed

It's not uncommon for people to refrain from ever looking under a bed. The space under a bed is a circus of dust mites, pubic hair, Taco Bell receipts, and old shoes. Why not add used jimmy hats to the mix? Bear in mind that this only works if one's mother never comes over. The first place a mother looks in her child's house is under the bed, because she is eager to judge just how filthy her child is. As such, this is a great solution if you are an orphan.

Become an orphan

Orphans have emotional issues, so they don't have many friends. They have no parents to judge their cleanliness. Roommates are tough to have because of the aforementioned mental instability. No personal relationships means no person to find your used rubbers. Having no parents is the perfect way to dispose of your condoms... and your crippling daddy issues.

Abstinence

I am required by the law of my home state to include abstinence education in this article. This is a "highly effective method" for disposing of condoms, since there will be no need for condoms because one would be abstaining from all sexual contact. I "highly recommend" avoiding all contact with "human beings" and "ignoring your base, physical needs."

If you would like more information on abstinence education, please do not call anyone, because a person will answer and their voice might be too sexy for you to be able to control your deviant urges.

New Mexico Bowl outrates Butler-Indiana on CBS

Written by Joe Lucia on .

People (myself included) wonder just what the appeal is of bowl games like the New Mexico Bowl, the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, the Beef O'Brady's Bowl, and so on and so forth. Well, here's why there are so many bowl games: people watch them. The New Mexico Bowl on Saturday (which featured a thrilling comeback from Arizona to beat Nevada 49-48 in the final seconds) outrated Butler's basketball upset over #1 Indiana on CBS. The bowl game on ESPN drew a 1.9 overnight, while the hoops game drew just a 1.5 in the same timeslot. The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (which began at 4:30 and featured Utah State and Toledo sleepwalking through three quarters before exploding in the fourth) also outdrew #1 getting upset, drawing a 1.8 overnight.

The first two of 35 bowl games to air this winter were both slightly up from last year. The New Mexico Bowl's ratings increasing 19% from 2011 (Temple-Wyoming) and holding strong with 2010's UTEP-BYU matchup. The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl was slightly up from 2011 (Ohio-Utah State), and was even with 2010 (Fresno State-Northern Illinois).

The remaining bowl games have the advantage of great scheduling on their side. Thursday's Poinsettia Bowl between BYU and San Diego State has no NFL Network game to compete against. Saturday's New Orleans Bowl and Las Vegas Bowl air back to back on ESPN before Saturday's NFL Network primetime game between the Falcons and Lions. The Hawaii Bowl will take place in Monday Night Football's timeslot on ESPN on Christmas Eve.?

ESPN also lucked out by not getting very many ugly matchups in the early part of the bowl season. Of the first eight bowl games of the season, the only three that don't seem to have much appeal to the casual fan are the Beef O'Brady's Bowl (UCF vs Ball State), the New Orleans Bowl (Louisiana-Lafayette vs East Carolina), and the Little Caesar's Bowl (Western Kentucky vs Central Michigan). If ESPN can keep ratings strong until Christmas, they're poised for huge gains once the big-time bowls begin.

As for CBS's disappointment with Butler-Indiana, it's not nearly as bad as you'd think. The game was up 50% from last year's comparable matchup between Butler and Purdue, and is far and away the highest-rated game of the season on CBS, destroying Arkansas-Michigan (0.9 last week) and Baylor-Kentucky (1.1 two weeks ago). While it's not a good sign that a marquee matchup like this was outrated by a mediocre bowl game on cable, it's the same argument that people make when MLB playoff games are outrated by regular season NFL games.

Football is king, and it will stay on that pedestal for as long as it wants. Just because a sport can't beat a football game doesn't mean the sport is in trouble or that the end is nigh. Comparisons need to be modified when the competition is on the gridiron, even if it's a largely meaningless bowl game between two barely above .500 teams.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A union representing hundreds of Broadway theater cleaners, porters, elevator operators and bathroom attendants reached a tentative agreement with theater producers to avert a strike, both sides said Monday.

The potential deal must still be ratified by the 250 theater workers represented by the 32BJ union, a process expected to be completed by next week. Details of the deal were not immediately revealed.

"This is a fair agreement that addresses the concerns of our members, the men and women who work hard every day to keep theaters safe, clean and running for the millions of theatergoers who come to Broadway from around the world," said Shirley Aldebol, vice president of 32BJ.

Members of the union last week authorized a strike if an acceptable new deal wasn't reached by the end of the year. The current contact ends Dec. 30. Workers are seeking pay increases and better health care benefits.

The Broadway League, which represents producers and theater owners, said the tentative agreement came after productive negotiations.

Any strike would have affected workers at 32 of Broadway's 40 theaters where the 32BJ has a contract, including all the Shubert, Nederlander and Jujamcyn-owned theaters, as well as the Circle in the Square Theatre.

The most recent major strike on Broadway was in late 2007, when a 19-day walkout dimmed the lights on more than two dozen shows and cost producers and the city millions of dollars in lost revenue.

The 32BJ, an affiliate of the Service Employees International Union, has more than 120,000 total members, with most concentrated in the Northeast. It represents janitors, property maintenance workers, doormen, security officers, window cleaners and food service workers. The Coalition of Broadway Unions and Guilds had backed 32BJ in its strike authorization.
