Family Fears Revenge After Brutal Assault on Pregnant Woman ...

Family members of a 22-year-old pregnant woman who reportedly was kidnapped, shot and set afire this weekend are concerned about the safety of the victim, her newborn son and their own, police said Tuesday.

?The family has asked that we not release any more information about (the victim),? Warren Police Detective Paul Houtos said after the two Warren men accused of committing the Saturday morning attack were formally charged in District Court. ?The family fears retaliation.?

Authorities have charged Antonio Mathis and Jamal Rogers, both 22, with assault with intent to murder, conspiracy to commit assault with intent to murder and felony firearm possession. The charge of assault with intent to murder is a felony punishable by up to life in prison.

Also Tuesday, the victim, Latonya Bowman, 22, who was 9 months pregnant, gave birth, officials said.

Mathis has been convicted of receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle, and Rogers has been convicted of unarmed robbery and a felony weapons offense.

Authorities said Bowman had gone to a movie on Friday night with Rogers, her ex-boyfriend and the child?s father.

Bowman dropped Rogers at his home on Sherman Avenue in Warren early Saturday morning, according to authorities.

Rogers shares the home with his mother, a girlfriend and Mathis. Galasso said Rogers and Mathis have been friends since 2009.

Rogers allegedly convinced her to park her car in the garage at his home, closed the door, and then someone put a gun to her head, officials said.

Police said the men used duct tape to bind the woman?s hands and feet and cover her mouth and eyes. She was taken in her car to an abandoned lot near Interstates 94 and 75.

One of the men then allegedly doused the woman with lighter fluid and threw a lit match on her, officials said.

Bowman managed to get out of the backseat of the car and roll on the ground to smother the flames.

Police said Rogers allegedly then fired two shots at Bowman, one of which struck her in the back but missed vital organs.

The woman eventually freed herself and drove to her mother?s house on Detroit?s east side.

Because I teach Pitching the Perfect Presentation at UCLA Ext., I?m always asked for tips and techniques about public speaking, which apparently more people fear than they fear death.

I have an effective approach to tamping down your nerves and rising to meet your audience?s desire to be educated and entertained. I stole this trick from the method we use to prepare guests and hosts for interviews on television and radio.

The stolen trick

The trick? Prepare a question guide for yourself. Imagine you?re interviewing the most interesting you.

Start this way. Simply write down the top 5 to 10 questions that are likely to open up a discussion about the most important issues surrounding your topic. Then, to put it into a presentation format: simply answer each questions with facts, examples, success stories, analogies, statistics, testimonials and even dramatic quotations from sages you feel support your desired course of action.

For example: a question might be: Why Take Action Now?

Your answer might be: ?As the famous game designer Bill Budge says: ?After two weeks of working on a project, you know whether it will work or not.??

Then, in your presentation you would go on about the proposed schedule and other details that support your point of view on the issue.

Why a question guide?

A guide is a framework I provide for broadcast hosts who are going to interview the authors and experts I publish or promote at Pegasus Media World. I also send along a biography, which the host can use to introduce the guest. I include exactly the right mix of information to stir up some excitement about the topic and give credibility to the author. Plus, hosts also get the question guide.

The biography and guide are designed to help structure a broadcast interview so it?s informative and entertaining.? This accomplishes our goals of promoting the book or expert by engaging the audience (who might just be listening and not able to call in with their own questions). And, it helps the host come up to speed in-the-moment if they haven?t had a chance to read the guest?s book.

Your typical audience in business ? and even in job interviews ? need to be inspired to commit to listening to you and often isn?t prepared for your presentation. That?s why you can treat your audience the way I treat interviewers. Remember, I call whomever is listening to you ?your audience,? whether it?s one person or thousands.

For broadcast interviews I typically provide the questions without including the answers so the conversation feels lively and unrehearsed. Occasionally, I?ll include a brief note so that the host will be prepared for the conversation that?s sparked by each question. You can use your question guide as a meeting map, which is what I call an agenda.

For your presentation, you might not want to write out your answers even for yourself. Instead, under each question just jot down some bullet points to prompt yourself. Then, you can appear lively and fresh, rather than rehearsed and stale.

Start your preparation by asking yourself (or those who might be participating in your meeting) these two questions.

1. ?What about me and my background will give me credibility on this topic and inspire the audience to give me their attention??
2. ??What are the burning questions about my topic that the audience will want me to answer??

Oil edges above $91 amid Iran nuclear concerns

The price of oil rose slightly to above $91 a barrel Tuesday amid concerns that tensions over Iran's nuclear program could escalate as sanctions tighten this summer.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for July delivery was up 38 cents to $91.24 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 20 cents at $90.86 on Friday, the last day it settled in New York. Markets were closed in the U.S. on Monday for the Memorial Day holiday.

In London, Brent crude for July delivery was down 13 cents at $106.98 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Crude has dropped from $106 four weeks ago amid signs of slowing global growth and optimism that a military conflict over Iran's nuclear capabilities could be avoided.

Last week, negotiators from Iran and six world powers met for a second round of meetings and agreed to talk again next month.

However, sanctions by the U.S. and Europe aimed at limiting Iran's oil exports are scheduled to tighten in July, and reports that Iran is continuing to enrich uranium ? a key component to building a nuclear weapon ? have traders nervous.

"The market undoubtedly found support based on Iran's ability to string the West along," energy trader and consultant The Schork Group said in a report.

The U.S. and Israel have said they will not accept Iran developing nuclear weapons. Iran says it is developing nuclear power for peaceful purposes.

"The oil market remains firmly in the grip of external factors," said analysts at Commerzbank in Frankfurt. "There are risks on both the supply and the demand side, which more or less balance each other out."

Commerzbank listed three key events, all in mid-June, which could give the market renewed direction ? OPEC's meeting in Vienna, talks on Iran's nuclear program and elections in Greece.

On Monday, uncertainty in financial markets in Europe also helped limit oil price gains. Spain's stock market slumped while borrowing costs rose on concern over the bailout of nationalized lender Bankia. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said the country's banking sector would not need an international rescue, but the uncertainty has been weighing on financial markets.

Those concerns have likewise weakened the euro, which has helped pull oil prices down in recent weeks. A stronger dollar makes commodities priced in dollars, such as crude, more expensive to investors with other currencies. The euro was down slightly at $1.2524 on Tuesday.

"Should the euro weaken further, we will look for oil prices to fall as low as $84.94," The Schork Group said.

In other energy trading, heating oil was up 0.48 cent at $2.8377 per gallon and gasoline futures added 1.25 cents at $2.8442 per gallon. Natural gas fell 4.9 cents at $2.578 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Bigfoot Hair Samples Wanted At Oxford University

Oxford University wants Bigfoot DNA, such as hair samples, in an effort to crack the mystery. They want to find out if Bigfoot (or the Yeti) actually exists as a species, and they are determined to do it through genetics.

In a project announced this week, Oxford University and Lausanne Museum of Zoology scientists appealed to museums, scientists and yeti aficionados to share samples thought to be from the mythical ape-like creature. Researchers plan to focus on hair to determine the species it originated from.

Bryan Sykes of Oxford University said the group had already received samples to test, including blood, hair, and items supposedly chewed by Bigfoot.

Sykes acknowledged that the chances of proving a new yeti species? existence was low, but ?if we don?t look, we?ll never find out.?

Other experts agreed recent advances made in DNA testing could theoretically solve the Bigfoot question.

?If the Yeti is real and somebody has found bits of their hair, you should be able to tell from the DNA in the hair if this is actually a Yeti,? said Mark Thomas, a professor of evolutionary genetics at University College London. He is not connected to the Bigfoot project.

New genetic tests will be done on just a few strands of hair and should be completed within weeks. Even if the sample is judged to come from an unknown species, scientists should be able to tell how closely it is related to other species, including apes or humans.

In fact, there is already evidence of interbreeding between homo sapiens and Neanderthals.

Microsoft: Yes, We Do Send Takedown Requests To Bing, Too

Microsoft says it does send copyright-related takedown requests to its own search engine, Bing, in addition to the multitude of requests that it sends to Google.

This comes on the heels of yesterday?s news that Microsoft is the number one submitter of copyright-related URL removal requests to Google. It sent more than 500,000 such requests in the past month, asking Google to remove URLs that host pirated copies of Microsoft products and other copyright-infringing material.

TechDirt pointed out that some of the URLs that Microsoft asked Google to remove were still appearing in Bing?s search results.

A Microsoft spokesperson explained that to us today, saying that it?s because the infringing URLs hadn?t been indexed in Bing when the takedown notices were sent:

Microsoft sends takedown notices to search engines, including Bing, only after it verifies that content has been indexed. At the time of the takedown notice in question, the link to the particular piece of infringing content was not included in Bing?s search results.

The TorrentRoom.com URL that TechDirt showed as listed in Bing yesterday is no longer showing in Bing?s index.

In this case, then, it appears that Google?s speed in indexing URLs ? which it often does more quickly than Bing ? is the main reason why Google had received the takedown request in question before Bing did.

But I have to add ? Bing isn?t going to make many friends with related searches like the one above that helps searchers find a site to download Spartacus.

Troops kill at least 50 people in central Syria, activists say

BEIRUT???President Bashar Assad's forces killed at least 50?civilians, including 13 children, in central Syria on Friday, activists said, in one of the highest death tolls in one specific area since an internationally brokered cease-fire went into effect last month.

Syrian troops using tanks, mortars and heavy machine guns pounded the area of Houla, a region made up of several towns and villages in the province of Homs, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees activist groups.

Both groups said at least 50?people were killed. The Observatory, which has a network of activists across the country, said the dead included 13 children. It added that about 100?people were wounded.

An amateur video posted online by activists showed more than a dozen bodies lined up inside a room.

"Houla was subjected to a massacre," a man could be heard saying inside the room.

The Observatory said in one incident in Houla, a family of six was killed when their home received a direct hit.

Homs has been among the hardest-hit provinces in a government crackdown since the uprising against Assad's regime began in March last year. The U.N. said several weeks ago that 9,000 people have been killed in Syria in the past 15 months. Hundreds more have died since.

Attacks have persisted despite the deployment of more than 250 U.N. observers who have fanned out across Syria to monitor a cease-fire brokered by international envoy Kofi Annan.

Despite the daily violations, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said Thursday that there was no "plan B" for the Annan initiative.

The northern city of Aleppo, a major economic hub, has remained largely supportive of Assad throughout the uprising, but anti-regime sentiment has been on the rise in recent weeks.

On Friday, Syrian forces fired tear gas and live ammunition to disperse thousands of protesters in Aleppo calling for Assad's ouster, killing five people, activists said.

Aleppo-based activist Mohammad Saeed said more than 10,000 people were protesting.

"The regime is desperately trying to put down the protests in Aleppo, but all this violence will backfire," he said.

He added that security forces shot dead five people, including a 12-year-old boy, identified as Amir Barakat.

Also Friday, a group of Lebanese Shiites who were kidnapped in Syria were released in good health, three days after gunmen abducted the men as they returned from a religious pilgrimage.

The kidnappings fueled fears that Lebanon is getting drawn into the bloody conflict in neighboring Syria. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said the men were "in good health and on their way to Beirut."

My friend has no issue with government spending per se; his problem is that he gets to observe the doings in Sacramento quite closely, and as he puts it, "it is even worse than you think up there."

California's state and local governments spend a lot of money. ?We ranked 4th in 2010 among the 50 states in per capita state and local spending. ? ? Yet if one looks at education spending, we are only average. ?Even worse (from the standpoint of my parochial pride, anyway), we trail Texas in education spending per capita.

My understanding is that once upon a time, California had among the most efficient and accountable governments in the country. ?The public schools were a particular source of pride. ?But the vast amounts of money are not being well managed now--such mismanagement is harmful whether it occurs in the public or private sector. ?How well government money is spent may be just as important as how much money is spent.

First sorry it took me this long to post the winners, I have been busy finishing off my project.
With that said, it is time for me to announce the winners :). As we all know the first winner for naming my worm character Stevie Wormer is Kayleigh.
Well the second winner for naming my Red Bird is ...Alan and the name that was given to the character is Reddy Red. A straight to the point name which I can work with. hope he likes his box of chocys when I give it to him.
The third and final winner for naming my Blue Bird is...Tom, and the winning name for that character is Blue Bird King (shortten to B. B. King). Although this is a cool name, I think I need to talk to him about editing it slightly because I can't help but think that the name is based on a blues singer and I don't think that it would work for my bird since he does not sing the blues. Well I hope he likes the box of chocys I will give him.
