Poor Sleep, High Blood Pressure? - Health News - Health.com

By Kathleen Doheny
HealthDay Reporter

MONDAY, Aug. 29 (HealthDay News) ? If you sleep poorly, your chances of developing high blood pressure may increase, new research suggest.

In the study, men with the lowest level of the deeper stages of slumber, known as slow-wave sleep, had an 80 percent higher chance of developing high blood pressure than men with the highest level of this restorative sleep.

The link held regardless of other factors, such as obesity or how long the men slept.

?Reductions in the deepest stage of sleep is specifically associated with an increased risk of developing high blood pressure,? said Dr. Susan Redline, the Peter C. Farrell Professor of Sleep Medicine at Brigham & Women?s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School.

The study, published in the Aug. 29 online edition of the journal Hypertension, reinforces other research that has linked sleep problems with a raised risk of obesity and cardiovascular problems, among other ills.

Redline evaluated 784 men, average age 75, who were part of the Outcomes of Sleep Disorders in Older Men Study. In 2003-05, the men did not have high blood pressure. Ideally, blood pressure readings should be below 120/80. When they returned for a follow up in 2007-09, the investigators found that 243 men had developed high blood pressure.

The researchers divided the men into four groups, from those with the lowest amount of slow-wave sleep to the highest.

After the researchers took into account age, race, body mass index and other factors, the link between low slow-wave sleep and higher blood pressure held. Even when the researchers took into account sleep-disordered breathing and the length of overall sleep, the link held.

Slow-wave sleep decreases with age, Redline said. ?Kids may have 40 percent slow-wave sleep [of total sleep],? she said, but healthy adults, overall, may have only about 25 percent.

In this study, the men averaged 11.2 percent of slow-wave sleep, she said. Those in the lowest of the four groups averaged only 4 percent or less. Other studies have shown that slow-wave sleep is lower in older men than in women.

While the study found an association between slow-wave sleep and high blood pressure, it did not prove a cause-and-effect.

The new research adds to information about the importance of sleep, said Dr. Alberto Ramos, co-director of the University of Miami Sleep Disorders Center.

Experts agree, he said, that not enough sleep, over time, can boost the risk of high blood pressure.

The new study, he noted, goes further by suggesting that ?the quality of your sleep, specifically the amount of deep sleep, is as important in your overall health ? or at least in developing high blood pressure ? as the actual amount of time you sleep.?

Exactly why this is so is not known for sure, according to Redline and Ramos.

?When you go to sleep, blood pressure normally falls,? Redline said. ?A lot of that fall occurs during slow-wave sleep.? When that typical drop in night-time pressure is affected by a lack of deep sleep, ?it may set you up for daytime elevations,? she added.

Ramos agreed that might explain the link.

Adults can take measures to try to increase slow-wave sleep, Redline said. ?Anything that wakes you up repeatedly will disrupt your slow-wave sleep,? she noted.

Getting treated for underlying disorders that can wake you up ? such as sleep apnea ? could help, she said.

The take-home message, Ramos said, is to pay attention to sleep quality, not just the length of your sleeping hours. Even though the link between low deep sleep and high blood pressure held after taking weight into account, Ramos noticed those in the lowest deep-sleep groups also tended to be heavier than the others. Avoiding obesity would be a good idea, he said.

In This Article I Will Be Taking A Look At The ... - Health & Fitness

It is a depressing fact of life, but ovarian cysts are something which lots of women have to deal with. But what the majority of females don?t realize is that left untreated ovarian cyst?s can lead to a great many other more serious health conditions. Some of these various other health issues are cardiovascular disease, diabetes, elevated bad cholesterol, cancers, reproductive issues, seizures and even high blood pressure. However a well known nutritional specialist and medical researcher, Carol Foster, is promoting an all natural way for females to combat this ailment.

Whenever most women are informed they have ovarian cysts, their doctors will either prescribe medication and drugs or tell the patient that surgery is there only choice. The issue with all the standard treatments is that for about 95% of the women who use them get temporary relief, but often end up getting a worse problem than they started with. Actually even ladies who opt for the surgery can end up having more ovarian cysts with in a mater of several weeks. These therapies will never have the ability to cure your cysts entirely because they only target the symptoms not the specific cause of the cysts.

Carol has created a program that not only deals with the cause of the ovarian cysts, but also demonstrates how to keep your cysts gone for good. The fact that this program uses a combination of the two natural methods and also science, has been proven to eliminate current ovarian cysts from females and also help to make sure you never have another problem with them.

The testimonials you will find on the site are from genuine people that have made use of Carols program to cure their ovarian cysts. For the most part women used the program and completely demolished their cysts in a matter of 7 to 9 weeks and this is also revealed with ultrasounds. The best part is that this program can help with the pain within as few as 10 days. One of the testimonials you will find on the website is from a woman who made the decision to have the surgical procedure to eliminate the cyst she had only to find out that inside of a year she had a couple of more cysts. She then found Carols program with the help of a friend and she has never experienced one more problem with ovarian cysts.

Once again you must realize that conventional strategies never solve the problem of your cysts because they do not address the cause. The program is selling for $39 and when you look at all the advantages you get from never having to deal with an ovarian cyst again, More than likely you will agree it is worth the price. You will also be happy to know that if you have any questions before you buy the plan, you can actually contact Carol directly through the web page. This is something that is really remarkable to me, as most ladies will of course have queries before buying a plan like this.

(AP Photo/Darron Cummings, File)

(AP) ? Chuckling and rolling her eyes, Serena Williams dismissed questions Monday about her tirade at a line judge over a foot-fault call at the end of her loss in the 2009 U.S. Open semifinals.

The 29-year-old American is back at the Grand Slam tournament for the first time since that infamous outburst during a match against eventual champion Kim Clijsters. Williams missed last year's U.S. Open after having surgery on her right foot.

Williams played coy at first during a pre-tournament news conference Monday when she was asked what she remembers most from the way her last U.S. Open ended and how "that controversial episode" might have affected the public's perception of her.

"You mean in the singles or doubles?" Williams asked.

Then she added: "I just remember I lost, and that was that. I got really popular. A lot of people were telling me they thought I was super cool, that they never saw me so intense. So, yeah, it was awesome."

Asked whether she learned anything from what happened in 2009, Williams replied: "I don't know. I don't think about it. Are you still thinking about it?"

She rolled her eyes as she continued: "Oh, my God. That was, like, two years ago. This is, like, two years later."

During the Sept. 12, 2009, match at Flushing Meadows, Williams was two points from losing when she was called for a foot fault ? a call rarely, if ever, made at that stage of such a significant match. It resulted in a double-fault for Williams, moving Clijsters one point from victory.

Williams paused, retrieved a ball to serve again and then stopped. She stepped toward the lineswoman, screaming, cursing and shaking the ball at her. Williams was penalized a point and, because it happened to come on match point, the semifinal ended right there; Clijsters won 6-4, 7-5.

Williams, whose 13 Grand Slam singles titles include three from the U.S. Open, drew an immediate $10,000 fine from the U.S. Tennis Association and later a record $82,500 fine from the Grand Slam administrator.

She also faced a "probationary period" at Grand Slam tournaments in 2010 and 2011, and was told she could be suspended from the U.S. Open if she had another "major offense."

Clijsters, who won the 2005, 2009 and 2010 U.S. Opens, withdrew from the tournament because of a stomach muscle injury.

"It's sad that she's not here. But, you know, when you're injured, you're injured. There's nothing you can really do about it," Williams said. "Last year, I was injured, and there was nothing I could do about it."

5 Ways To Trace Your Family History Without Leaving Home ...

ElyseRomano Saturday, August 27 2011 @ 09:10 AM Eastern Daylight Time Views: 19

Want to trace your family history, but don't know where to start?

In the case of genealogy, the best place to start is also the easiest: your home. Thanks to the innovations of the Internet, beginning to establish a family tree is as simple as logging online and taking advantage of the many resources available on the World Wide Web.

Here are 5 ways to to kick off the hunt for your ancestors without leaving home:

  1. Search obituaries. Most family trees begin in the present and work backwards, so the obituaries of your most recently deceased relatives are a good place to start researching your ancestry. Obituary notices contain invaluable information like date of birth and date of death, as well as place of burial and insight into the life of the deceased person. They may also lead you to living relatives who may be able to provide more information. Obituaries can be found using an obituary search engine, or using the archive of the local paper.
  2. Ask your relatives. With the modern conveniences of email, instant messaging, and Skype, it's easier than ever to stay in touch with even the most distant of kin. Interview your family members and gather all the information you can from those who know your family best. Creating a genealogy website or blog is a great way to get your family interested in the project, and mailing lists and forums can provide access to family members you don't even know you have.
  3. Take advantage of previous research. Someone in your family may have already started mapping out the family tree, so search for any previous research that may have been done before you expend unnecessary energy reinventing the wheel. Pedigree databases like RootsWeb and FamilySearch.com provide access to previously researched family trees, which may even include contact information for the original researcher.
  4. Perform a death record search. As death records are typically the most recent record created for a deceased family member, they are often easier to find than records of other kinds. Search through the various online death indexes that are provided by both official and volunteer organizations to fill in the gaps on your family tree. If you're located in the U.S., the Social Security Death Index is available for free searches from multiple sources.
  5. Make use of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Few sources have more information on ancestry than the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. FamilySearch has been gathering information on genealogy for over 100 years, using the resources of their 4,500 family history centers (located in 70 countries!) and the renowned Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Multi-Factorial Reason Of Drug Rehabilitation | Articles Twinkle

Drug rehabilitation is really a process wherein a person undergoes via healing and recovery after becoming indulged in substance abuse. The approach towards this is multi-faceted. It doesn?t only deal with physical symptoms but also psychological ones. Problem goes beyond the substance abuse itself but from the extremely start of the use of drugs, how the person knew about it and when he began using it. Individuals resort to prohibited drugs as a result of curiosity, peer pressure, issue avoidance and desire for pain suppression.

Curiosity happens at any age. This is why some parents determine to show their children the don?ts in life at a young age so as to stop them from wanting to know more about drugs and merely satisfying their curiosity. As soon as an individual is curious on what a substance is and how it feels like, they are tempted to attempt it although it is prohibited. Some manage to stop themselves from using much more but some just cannot resist the effects of drugs and continuously engage in utilizing it until it goes out of manage.

Peer pressure is extremely common in teenagers. Teens are experiencing Identity VS. Role Confusion and they put their best efforts to fit in a group. This desire leads to provocative actions like attempting out smoking, alcohol and drugs. Although some teens are against its use, they are forced to do so due to the desire to be accepted in a group. Drug rehabilitation approach throughout this age is various than for older ones because teenagers are fragile and sensitive.

Issue avoidance is the most typical by far. Individuals treat drugs as an escape from reality and as a temporary getaway to an additional world wherein problems are nonexistent. Although issues are typical, not all are able to cope successfully and resort to these measures. Occasionally, individuals feel that the globe is an excessive amount of for them to bear that they see drug as the quickest escape. Small do they know that they?re being dependent with the substance until drug rehabilitation becomes the only option.

We all get to encounter discomfort, might it be physical or emotional. Particular drugs are designed to suppress the pain becoming felt by the user. This is why people experiencing high levels of discomfort of any type demand the use of drugs to rapidly alleviate the pain they?re feeling. Discomfort is some thing that no one wants to really feel and they would do every thing to lessen if not eradicate the discomfort they?re feeling.

Individuals use drugs for numerous reasons. Some may seem acceptable while some violate the laws of the society. Then once more, when a person go overboard and become too demanding concerning the use of drugs, individuals around him must start intervening and proceed to drug rehabilitation.

Touchanote Brings Evernote to Life With NFC Tags [VIDEO] (Mashable)

[More from Mashable: Why Evernote Bet the Company on Mobile & Social Media]

Mix an edgy consumer NFC idea with $55,000 in prize winnings and the support of Evernote's fast-growing & well-financed platform, and you might have a soapbox stand tall enough to capture the world's attention.

This is the position that startup Touchanote finds itself in after winning Evernote's developer competition.

[More from Mashable: How 9 Food Trucks Use Tech To Drive Business]

Founder Hamid Zaidi wowed attendees and judges at the Evernote Trunk Conference with an Android application that stores links to Evernote content on physical NFC tags (see above). Create a link to an Evernote note and slap an NFC tag on any object you'd like. Then, simply touch your device to the tag to open your note.

Touchanote, says Zaidi, who spoke with Mashable in an exclusive post-win interview, proffers a right-here, right-now consumer use case for NFC technology.

Much ado is being made about NFC-enabled payments, but the infrastructure and business adoption required to support payments is likely still two years out, he says. "Meanwhile, millions of lonely NFC phone users out there are excited to use the technology now," says Zaidi. "We want to be the face for the consumer-driven NFC market."

Touchanote is like a backup disk for your brain: Evernote serves as the memory bank and NFC markers make for physical placeholders that route you back to important information. Instructions or passwords stored on tags stuck on associated objects make for practical use cases. Tags on photo frames, however, could call up more memories in digital photo form.

The application connects the digital and physical realms in a way that brings Evernote CEO Phil Libin's vision of a "trusted second brain for all your lifetime memories" to fruition.

Touchanote has received an encouraging post-victory reception. The application launched on the Android store last Thursday and users have already ordered 500 tags -- tags are sold in 1, 10 and 25 batches for $3, $10 and $20 respectively.

The startups biggest challenge, says Zaidi, will be to meet demand with enough tags, which are supplied by a third-party manufacturer. He doesn't seem to the think that the lack of NFC-enabled devices for sale will work against the company.

"This is a tangible market that people have disregarded," he says, citing a forecast that more than 40 million NFC phones will ship this year. "I think that is a huge and blank canvas."

vitamin, von Willebrand disease and vulva ? women's health

vitamin
A group of nutrient chemicals that are considered essential to good health. Chemically they can be divided into two groups: the fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K, which tend to be stored in the body; and the watersoluble vitamins, the B group and C, which except for vitamin B12 are not stored in the body and need frequent replenishment. Some vitamins are prduced in the body. Vitamin D is manufactured in the skin during exposure to sunlight, and vitamin K, biotin and pantothenic acid are made inside the human gut by resident bacteria when certain foods are eaten. Most vitamins, however, must be ingested.
All of the vitamins are needed, although their mode of action is not precisely understood, and all of them are available in a wide variety of ordinary foods. Deficient vitamin intake leads to specific symptoms and diseases.
The B vitamins, especially folic acid (or folate), are important in pregnancy, and pregnant women may need supplements of them. Folic acid and vitamin B6 may reduce the risk of developing heart disease. Vitamin E has been found helpful by some women in relieving the HOT FLASHES of menopause, and is thought to be helpful in pre- venting heart disease and Alzheimer?s, as well as boosting the body?s immune system. Vitamin D, which is essential for calcium absorption, is thought to be particularly important for women after menopause to help prevent bone loss (see OSTEOPOROSIS). Another category of vitamins are the so-called antioxidants?vitamins E and C, and beta-carotene, a precursor of vitamin A. They neutralize the body?s oxygen-free radicals, which are implicated in DNA mutations (which can initiate cancer), atherosclerosis (leading to heart disease), cataract formation and other processes. These vitamins currently are being closely inves- tigated for their disease-fighting ability. Overdoses of certain vitamins, particularly of the fat-soluble ones, especially A and D, also can make a person ill. Nutritionists also recommend upper limits for vitamin B6 (no more than 100 mg a day), folic acid (1,000 mcg) and niacin (35 mg). Recent studies indicate that taking 400 mg or more of vitamin E per day increases the risk of heart disease. See the accompanying table; also see DIET.

von Willebrand disease
A hereditary platelet disorder that impairs clotting. Its symptoms are extremely heavy menstrual periods (10 pads a day, or more than a super tampon an hour), excessive nosebleeds, easy bruising and bleeding heavily after surgery, including dental work. It is treated by administering factor VIII, a clotting factor, or injecting desmopressin acetate or DDAVP (a syn- thetic hormone), also available in the form of a nasal spray.
See also HEMOPHILIA.

vulva
Also pudenda, external genitalia. The external visible female organs of reproduction, which include the MONS VENERIS (or pubis), LABIA majora and minora (outer and inner lips), CLITORIS, VESTI- BULE, opening of the URETHRA, INTROITUS (opening of the vagina), HYMEN and BARTHOLIN?S GLANDS (also called vulvovaginal glands). See also PERINEUM. The vulva is subject to a number of disorders, the most serious of which are cancer and the various infec- tions transmitted by sexual contact (see CANCER, VULVAR; SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE).

Home & Family ? Blog Archive ? Fun And Excitement With Cribbage

Understanding how to play cribbage is challenging, but playing the sport is not hard and fun. The article of discovering how to play cribbage is the earliest player to acquire 121 points.

Listed here are game instructions concerning how to play cribbage with 2 players. All of the items linked to how to play cribbage are quite obvious. You?ll need a standard 52 deck of cards, and cribbage board, with pegs to maintain score. The rank and price of the cards in cribbage are; picture cards count 10 points, aces worth 1 point and all of other cards are scored at face value.

When starting the experience of cribbage, the cards are shuffled, cut 2- 3 x and placed facedown. Each player pulls out one card also, the person with the lowest card would be the dealer. Following initial deal, the deal alternates from hand to hand till the game is passed. The dealer deals 6 cards face down to each and every player. The remainder of the un-dealt cards are placed with their face down for another person.

To start the cribbage game, each player compares the 6 cards they were dealt and decides which 2 to discard into the crib. This may leave 4 cards and keep for their hand. The non-dealer cuts the remaining pack, turning over top card indicating first card. If the up-card is really a Jack, the card dealer automatically gets 2 points.

You start with the non-dealer, players will alternately lay cards down. As cards are laid down, players will call out value of the total, until a new player cannot lie down another card without exceeding 31. The gamer says ?go?, allowing the other player to lay down another card. This have to be done without exceeding 31 and also for as often as necessary. After the player has laid down lots of cards as possible without going over 31, and says ?go? 1 point is earned. When the total is precisely 31, 2 points are earned.

Two points are going to be earned by either player, once they reach 15. Points will also be earned and pegged for pairs. Sequences also can score points. Once all cards have been completely played, count them. The non-dealer counts first, together with the dealer and then the crib. Your hand contains the 4 cards played, together with cut card. One point is scored for holding the Jack within the suit that has been cut. Pairs, triples and quadruples count 2, 6 and 12 points. Sequences count 1 point per card and should include things like at the least three cards. Any mix of cards adding up to 15, are worth 2 points. A flush will probably be worth 4 points.

Several handy ideas to remember regarding how to play cribbage are below. The person who wins is first to peg out. A 10 card, is likely to be the up-card. Make an effort to never pass a five or perhaps a pair with your opponent?s crib. Twenty-nine points may be the highest hand you could have in a cribbage game.

Health And Fitness | Headache Causes - Know Them To Prevent ...

Numerous individuals have to deal with migraine symptoms at some point in time. Are you aware of what initiates a throbbing headache? Why headache crops up? These are crucial frequent questions to have a look at. This is a typically recognized fact thata migraine is usually a pain in the head or within the upper neck. Medical related studies reveal that headaches are common found in the majority of folks. Quite a few variables can cause headaches in a good many people. If at all possible, it is best to have a comprehension of these different causes in order to understand and prevent its occurrence.

Primary headaches, secondary headaches and other headaches are often the 3 categories of headaches. Why don't we take into account the most prevalent kind which is what doctors referred to as the primary headaches. One of the typically reported headache, the tension headache, is part of this kind of headaches. Even though some industry experts think that these are results from contracted muscles or associated with some modifications in the brain chemicals, research on this subject matter has not come up with a known trigger for this sort of migraine. Head pain are seldom recognized as symptoms of serious health conditions which is a positive thing. However, it's been shown by several research that these tension headaches are to some degree associated with a person's chosen lifestyle and therefore are easily influenced.

Now, we shall consider the most widespread headache triggers. Stress is in the top list. Stress has caused migraine in most people. Subsequent to becoming tensed, you can experience stress. Voluminous work in the office, an exciting activity with friends, a nerve-cracking event, and many more are examples of stress-causing activities. Getting inadequate sleep is an additional factor. A less number of sleep-hours than needed leads to tension and might induce a headache. It is always important to have enough sleep to prevent headache.

Some food items with food additives like cheese, chocolates, MSG, caffeine, etc. may end up in tension headache as well. The food that a man or woman consumed might activate the migraine to happen and also the person probably won't even know about it. Other causes which may activate the appearance of throbbing headache consist of depression and anxiety, meal skipping, not enough physical exercise, tiredness, hormonal changes like menopause or pregnancy for females, cigarette smoking, alcoholic beverages intake, as well as others.

One other headache set off is taking medicines, especially if it is overused. Considering medicines are most often ingested everyday as maintenance or day-to-day supplement, it is actually necessary usually. But this matter could be solved. What you can do is consult one's medical doctor to get a practical change of medicine if migraine comes about often.

In summary, it's really a recognized fact that some things could cause head pain to happen. If it cannot be stopped, it might be helpful to have a greater understanding on how to decrease it by determining the frequency of its occurrence. So keeping track and observing how often headaches happens and in what manner it occurs is significant. It is normally anything that helps you to avoid tension headaches. It is really just a matter of lifestyle management. So instead of trying out several over-the-counter medications such as excedrin migraine for a solution, making some simple modifications to your lifestyle may just solve the problem.

About Author Amanda Alston :

A large number of people would definitely desire to know what causes migraines when suffering from one. In addition, they desire to know exactly what are a few of the natural cures for headaches that they can employ to get over their problem.

Small quake has big reach

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake in Virginia this afternoon was felt across the U.S. East Coast, shaking offices and nerves from Washington D.C. to New York City. That's a whole lot of shaking for a medium-sized quake. The reason is the geology of the East Coast itself.

Census of Marine Life

Most precise estimate ever is based on novel, validated analytical technique; Yet to be discovered, described, catalogued: 91 percent of marine species, 86 percent of species overall

Eight million, seven hundred thousand species (give or take 1.3 million).

That is a new, estimated total number of species on Earth -- the most precise calculation ever offered -- with 6.5 million species found on land and 2.2 million (about 25 percent of the total) dwelling in the ocean depths.

Announced today by Census of Marine Life scientists, the figure is based on an innovative, validated analytical technique that dramatically narrows the range of previous estimates. Until now, the number of species on Earth was said to fall somewhere between 3 million and 100 million.

Furthermore, the study, published today by PLoS Biology, says a staggering 86% of all species on land and 91% of those in the seas have yet to be discovered, described and catalogued.

Says lead author Camilo Mora of the University of Hawaii and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada: "The question of how many species exist has intrigued scientists for centuries and the answer, coupled with research by others into species' distribution and abundance, is particularly important now because a host of human activities and influences are accelerating the rate of extinctions. Many species may vanish before we even know of their existence, of their unique niche and function in ecosystems, and of their potential contribution to improved human well-being."

"This work deduces the most basic number needed to describe our living biosphere," says co-author Boris Worm of Dalhousie University. "If we did not know -- even by an order of magnitude (1 million? 10 million? 100 million?) -- the number of people in a nation, how would we plan for the future?"

"It is the same with biodiversity. Humanity has committed itself to saving species from extinction, but until now we have had little real idea of even how many there are."

Dr. Worm notes that the recently-updated Red List issued by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature assessed 59,508 species, of which 19,625 are classified as threatened. This means the IUCN Red List, the most sophisticated ongoing study of its kind, monitors less than 1% of world species.

The research is published alongside a commentary by Lord Robert May of Oxford, past-president of the UK's Royal Society, who praises the researchers' "imaginative new approach."

"It is a remarkable testament to humanity's narcissism that we know the number of books in the US Library of Congress on 1 February 2011 was 22,194,656, but cannot tell you -- to within an order-of-magnitude -- how many distinct species of plants and animals we share our world with," Lord May writes.

"(W)e increasingly recognize that such knowledge is important for full understanding of the ecological and evolutionary processes which created, and which are struggling to maintain, the diverse biological riches we are heir to. Such biodiversity is much more than beauty and wonder, important though that is. It also underpins ecosystem services that -- although not counted in conventional GDP -- humanity is dependent upon."

Drawing conclusions from 253 years of taxonomy since Linnaeus

Swedish scientist Carl Linnaeus created and published in 1758 the system still used to formally name and describe species. In the 253 years since, about 1.25 million species -- roughly 1 million on land and 250,000 in the oceans -- have been described and entered into central databases (roughly 700,000 more are thought to have been described but have yet to reach the central databases).

To now, the best approximation of Earth's species total was based on the educated guesses and opinions of experts, who variously pegged the figure in a range from 3 to 100 million -- wildly differing numbers questioned because there is no way to validate them.

Drs. Mora and Worm, together with Dalhousie colleagues Derek P. Tittensor, Sina Adl and Alastair G.B. Simpson, refined the estimated species total to 8.7 million by identifying numerical patterns within the taxonomic classification system (which groups forms of life in a pyramid-like hierarchy, ranked upwards from species to genus, family, order, class, phylum, kingdom and domain).

Analyzing the taxonomic clustering of the 1.2 million species today in the Catalogue of Life and the World Register of Marine Species, the researchers discovered reliable numerical relationships between the more complete higher taxonomic levels and the species level.

Says Dr. Adl: "We discovered that, using numbers from the higher taxonomic groups, we can predict the number of species. The approach accurately predicted the number of species in several well-studied groups such as mammals, fishes and birds, providing confidence in the method."

When applied to all five known eukaryote* kingdoms of life on Earth, the approach predicted:

  1. ~7.77 million species of animals (of which 953,434 have been described and cataloged)
  2. ~298,000 species of plants (of which 215,644 have been described and cataloged)
  3. ~611,000 species of fungi (moulds, mushrooms) (of which 43,271 have been described and cataloged)
  4. ~36,400 species of protozoa (single-cell organisms with animal-like behavior, eg. movement, of which 8,118 have been described and cataloged)
  5. ~27,500 species of chromista (including, eg. brown algae, diatoms, water moulds, of which 13,033 have been described and cataloged)

Total: 8.74 million eukaryote species on Earth.

(* Notes: Organisms in the eukaryote domain have cells containing complex structures enclosed within membranes. The study looked only at forms of life accorded, or potentially accorded, the status of "species" by scientists. Not included: certain micro-organisms and virus "types", for example, which could be highly numerous.)

Within the 8.74 million total is an estimated 2.2 million (plus or minus 180,000) marine species of all kinds, about 250,000 (11%) of which have been described and catalogued. When it formally concluded in October 2010, the Census of Marine Life offered a conservative estimate of 1 million+ species in the seas.

"Like astronomers, marine scientists are using sophisticated new tools and techniques to peer into places never seen before," says Australian Ian Poiner, Chair of the Census' Scientific Steering Committee. "During the 10-year Census, hundreds of marine explorers had the unique human experience and privilege of encountering and naming animals new to science. We may clearly enjoy the Age of Discovery for many years to come."

"The immense effort entering all known species in taxonomic databases such as the Catalogue of Life and the World Register of Marine Species makes our analysis possible," says co-author Derek Tittensor, who also works with Microsoft Research and the UN Environment Programme's World Conservation Monitoring Centre. "As these databases grow and improve, our method can be refined and updated to provide an even more precise estimate."

"We have only begun to uncover the tremendous variety of life around us," says co-author Alastair Simpson. "The richest environments for prospecting new species are thought to be coral reefs, seafloor mud and moist tropical soils. But smaller life forms are not well known anywhere. Some unknown species are living in our own backyards -- literally."

"Awaiting our discovery are a half million fungi and moulds whose relatives gave humanity bread and cheese," says Jesse Ausubel, Vice-President of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and co-founder of the Census of Marine Life. "For species discovery, the 21st century may be a fungal century!"

Mr. Ausubel notes the enigma of why so much diversity exists, saying the answer may lie in the notions that nature fills every niche, and that rare species are poised to benefit from a change of conditions.

In his analysis, Lord May says the practical benefits of taxonomic discovery are many, citing the development in the 1970s of a new strain of rice based on a cross between conventional species and one discovered in the wild. The result: 30% more grain yield, followed by efforts ever since to protect all wild varieties of rice, "which obviously can only be done if we have the appropriate taxonomic knowledge."

"Given the looming problems of feeding a still-growing world population, the potential benefits of ramping up such exploration are clear."

Based on current costs and requirements, the study suggests that describing all remaining species using traditional approaches could require up to 1,200 years of work by more than 300,000 taxonomists at an approximate cost of $US 364 billion. Fortunately, new techniques such as DNA barcoding are radically reducing the cost and time involved in new species identification.

Concludes Dr. Mora: "With the clock of extinction now ticking faster for many species, I believe speeding the inventory of Earth's species merits high scientific and societal priority. Renewed interest in further exploration and taxonomy could allow us to fully answer this most basic question: What lives on Earth?"

Navy Vet Wins $32 Million Asbestos Settlement In New York ...

A Kentucky man who served in the Navy for nearly 30 years as a fireman and boiler tender and now has mesothelioma was recently awarded a $32 million asbestos settlement for injuries and pain/suffering?by a New York jury, according to WSAZ-TV report.

Ronald Dummitt was awarded the settlement on August 17. The verdicts stated that he would receive $16 million for past pain and suffering, and $16 million for future pain and suffering he will endure as he battles mesothelioma.

?Mr. Dummitt may not have been awarded a Congressional Medal of Honor or a Purple Heart but I, and all that have come to know him, recognize that he is a true American hero?. Unfortunately, no man can give Ronald Dummitt?s health back to him. This verdict represents all that a just and civil society can do to redress the harm caused by culpable companies who fail to protect innocent workers whether on the job or in the line of duty,? said Timothy Eves, Dummitt?s attorney.

It was determined during the trial that Dummitt was exposed to asbestos while working in the fire and boiler rooms of U.S. Navy ships between 1960 and 1977. Much of this exposure occurred when he had to repair Crane Co.-manufactured valves that utilized asbestos-containing pads, gaskets and packing.

The jury also found that Dummitt was exposed to asbestos when working with deareating feed tanks manufactured by Elliott Turbomachinery Co., Inc., which also used asbestos pads and manhole gaskets.

For those who have served in the U.S. military and now suffer from mesothelioma cancer, asbestos law dictates that some may be entitled to financial compensation from companies that manufactured or sold asbestos products and may be at fault for the illness. Contact a mesothelioma attorney if you have any questions about pursuing a mesothelioma lawsuit.
