Scientists chart gene expression in the brain across lifespan

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2011) ? The "switching on" or expression of specific genes in the human genome is what makes each human tissue and each human being unique. A new study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Lieber Institute for Brain Development, and the National Institute of Mental Health found that many gene expression changes that occur during fetal development are reversed immediately after birth.

Reversals of fetal expression changes are also seen again much later in life during normal aging of the brain. Additionally, the team observed the reversal of fetal expression changes in Alzheimer's disease findings reported in other studies. The research team also found that gene expression change is fastest in human brain tissue during fetal development, slows down through childhood and adolescence, stabilizes in adulthood, and then speeds up again after age 50, with distinct redirection of expression changes prior to birth and in early adulthood.

Their findings are published in the October 27, 2011, edition of Nature. All of the data are available to the public as a web-based resource at: www.libd.org/braincloud.

Using a number of genomic analysis technologies, the research team conducted genome-wide genetic (DNA) and gene expression (RNA) analyses of brain tissue samples from the prefrontal cortex. Tissue represented the various stages of the human lifespan.

"We think that these coordinated changes in gene expression connecting fetal development with aging and neurodegeneration are central to how the genome constructs the human brain and how the brain ages," said Carlo Colantuoni, PhD, one of the lead authors of the study and a former research associate with the Department of Biostatistics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Colantuoni recently joined the Lieber Institute for Brain Development on the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus.

The research also showed that brain gene expression differences between genetically diverse individuals (of different races, for example) are no greater than the differences between individuals sharing many more genetic traits.

"Our findings highlight the fact that current technologies and analysis methods can address the effects of individual genetic traits in isolation, but we have virtually no understanding of how our many millions of genetic traits work in concert with one another," added Colantuoni.

US-Israeli spy suspect set to return home to NYC (AP)

NEW YORK ? A U.S.-Israeli citizen imprisoned in Egypt for four months on allegations he spied for Israel is expected to return home to New York City after gaining his freedom in a prisoner swap between the two countries.

Ilan Grapel is scheduled to arrive at John F. Kennedy International Airport at 10 a.m. EDT Saturday, escorted by his mother and U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman.

Twenty-seven-year-old Grapel is from Oakland Gardens, Queens, and once worked for Ackerman's office.

He was released Thursday in a deal that helped ease tensions between Egypt and Israel.

Egypt traded Grapel for 25 Egyptians held in Israeli jails.

Israel has denied that Grapel spied for the country, as did his family and friends.

Grapel was volunteering at a legal aid group in Cairo when he was arrested.

Cheaper Car Insurance for Pharmaceutical Reps: Finding the Right ...

They leave samples for these doctors to give to their patients so that they can see that they work.? Reps for pharmaceutical companies need to get car insurance for pharmaceutical reps that insure complete coverage.

Excessive Travel

Representatives travel quite a bit to not only doctors? offices but they are also required to travel to sales meetings. Because of all this travel, pharmaceutical reps do, car insurance for pharmaceutical reps could be proven costly. With more travel, there is more of a chance that these pharmaceutical reps will be in some type of auto accident. Car insurance companies will raise rates because of high mileage travel.

Costly Repairs

Sales representatives should take into consideration that car insurance for pharmaceutical reps will be somewhat cheaper for them if they drive a vehicle that does not cost much to replace. Cheaper Car Insurance carriers pay attention to the kind of car a pharmaceutical rep travels in. Cars that sell for more money cost more to repair and car insurance companies do not want to absorb this repair cost.

They will need to take out a full coverage policy that insures their car will be totally replaced and that all their medical bills will be paid in full in case of an accident. This is especially important if they have newer automobile.

Liability Alone

Medical pharmaceutical reps who drive a vehicle that is not worth what a newer car is worth may want? to tell their car insurance agent that they want liability only. Their car may only Blue Book for a couple thousand dollars and they would rather lower their payments and worry about paying for their car in case of accident at a later time. This could save them more money than one might think each month.

Uninsured Insurance

Representatives for pharmaceutical companies may want to take out car insurance for pharmaceutical reps that has uninsured drivers insurance written into the policy. Uninsured drivers insurance protects a driver when the other car in an accident has no insurance. This type of policy pays for your vehicle and your medical bills in case of any injuries.

'Evil' inmate who killed SD guard: I'd kill again (AP)

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. ? A South Dakota inmate who acknowledged killing a state penitentiary guard in a failed escape attempt asked a judge on Wednesday to sentence him to death, saying his one regret is that he did not kill another officer and that he will kill again.

Eric Robert, 49, pleaded guilty in September to killing Ronald "R.J." Johnson on April 12 ? Johnson's birthday ? in an attempt to sneak past other security. Robert waived his right to a jury trial and said he wanted to be put to death, but Second Circuit Judge Bradley Zell said the state still had to prove the death penalty is warranted. Robert had been serving an 80-year-sentence on a kidnapping conviction when he attempted to escape with Rodney Berget, 49.

Robert told Zell during his pre-sentencing hearing that he was so full of anger and hungry for freedom on April 12 that he would have killed anyone who stood in his way.

"Brad Zell, if you stood between me and the door of freedom, I would kill you," Robert said.

Robert said the one regret he has from April 12 is that he did not bring the pipe with him to the gate to kill the officer who stopped him. Once he realized his plan was going to fail, Robert said he began climbing up the wall of the prison ? not to escape but to try to reach for the rifle of an officer on the lookout.

"I would have shot that weapon until it was empty," he said.

Zell told Robert that wanting to die is not reason enough for the death penalty.

"There are many people who want to die," Zell said, adding that that doesn't count as an aggravating factor.

The judge must find at least one aggravating factor was present during the killing to sentence Robert to death. The state presented five factors during the three-day pre-sentencing hearing: the death of a correctional officer, the manner of death, where and why it occurred, and the defendants' criminal background.

Robert said he was guilty of all five factors and offered a sixth one to the judge ? stealing Johnson's uniform, which included his wallet with money inside.

Robert chose not to present mitigating evidence during the hearing ? including time as a little league coach and EMT ? that could have swayed the judge to sentence him to life in prison. His good deeds are irrelevant now, he said.

"That person that did good no longer exists," Robert said.

Robert, sitting next to one of his lawyers and wearing an orange jumpsuit with his feet and hands shackled, ended his statement by saying that his death will not bring Johnson back, but it will start the healing process for his family. Robert then wiped away a tear.

But one of Robert's defense lawyers, Mark Kadi, said his client did take issue with being characterized as a sexual predator stemming from a kidnapping conviction in 2005. Robert contends he kidnapped the 18-year-old girl to rob her, not sexually assault her.

Lynette Johnson, Ronald Johnson's widow, broke down in tears and had to be escorted off the witness stand as she testified about how her life has been ruined because of Robert's actions on April 12. In their 34 years together, they spent a total of six nights apart, she said.

"We weren't done," she said. "We weren't done living. He wasn't done living with me."

Lynette Johnson called Robert "evil" and a "coward" and has a hard time responding when one of her six grandchildren ask about their papa.

"He decided to take him away from me," she said as she looked directly at Robert. "You are a coward."

Berget, who has pleaded not guilty to the slaying, also faces the death penalty. His trial is scheduled to start Jan. 30. A third inmate, Michael J. Nordman, 47, was charged with supplying some of the items used in the killing. Prosecutors have not said whether they will seek the death penalty for Nordman.

Karl Frisch: GOP Blinded by Anti-Tax Madness this Halloween

Every year at about this time, I break out my DVD of the 1936 anti-drug propaganda flick Reefer Madness. No it's not exactly the scariest movie one might choose when getting into the Halloween spirit, but few things are funnier than watching a film made more than 70 years ago as it attempts to frighten the bejesus out of anyone who might be tempted to try marijuana.

I bet you didn't know, for example, that manslaughter, attempted rape, and suicide are among the likely outcomes should you break down and smoke a joint -- at least that's what happens in this picture.

The knee jerk fear of pot the film attempts to plant with its audience isn't that much different than the fear and trepidation Republicans attempt to sew among the American people when it comes to taxes.

Both rely heavily on gimmicks, propaganda, and misinformation to brainwash their intended targets -- you.

Much has been said of flavor-of-the-month Republican presidential front-runner Herman Cain's "999 plan" which would create a 9 percent federal sales tax (that's in addition to your local and state sales tax) and raise federal income taxes on the poor to 9 percent while lowering the same taxes on millionaires and billionaires to the same percentage.

Questioned about the impact his new federal sales tax would have on such basic needs as food and clothing, Cain said the poor and working families could eat "used" food to save dough -- basically telling the 99 percent, "Let them eat poop!" Talk about all "trick" and no "treat."

Perhaps sensing that his presidential aspirations were slipping through his fingers because of Cain's tax-plan-inspired rise in Republican polls, Governor Rick Perry announced his own gimmicky, unworkable "flat tax" proposal this week.

If the Perry plan looks familiar to those who follow such things, it is with good reason. It was drafted with the help of Steve Forbes who recently endorsed the Texas Governor and previously spent nearly $70 million -- money left to him by his deceased and closeted gay father -- pushing an anti-gay, anti-choice platform for president in 2000, which was capped off with a proposed flat tax.

If Forbes went trick-or-treating at the infamous Perry hunting lodge, he could by $1.9 billion of his favorite candy with the money he'd save under the very same plan he helped the Texas Governor write.

The Republican anti-tax fervor is stoked by a ginger-haired, taxphobic demon by the name of Grover Norquist. His Americans for Tax Reform pledge -- a promise to never raise taxes under any circumstances, ever (even during times of war) -- has been signed by nearly every GOP presidential candidate, scores of Republican local elected officials, and more than 300 members of the House and Senate.

The Norquist pledge has crippled the ability of Congressional Republicans to honestly come to the negotiating table and work with Democrats to create jobs and solve our national debt time bomb. They respect their pledge to Norquist's special interest group more than their oath to our Constitution, which is precisely the reason he's been nicknamed "Gridlock Grover" by the Constitutional Accountability Center.

When Republicans do come to the negotiating table, their proposals are equally maddening.

This week, in an act of faux-compromise, Speaker John Boehner decided to press a vote on President Obama's jobs legislation. Not the entire bill mind you, just one piece that was included to engender support from Republicans. In other words, the Speaker offered to compromise with House Democrats by allowing a vote only on a provision Republicans already support.

What measure did they want to push through in an effort to solve our jobs problem? I'm glad you asked because the answer is as disturbing as it is mind boggling, especially when it comes to job creation.

To make sure government contractors pay all of their taxes, we currently withhold three percent of the money paid on contractor projects. It is a practice started during the Bush Administration that was designed to deter tax cheats and it has saved us billions of dollars.

That is what Republicans want to end. I'm not exactly sure what jobs would be created by making life easier on tax cheats. It's hardly likely that the GOP was looking to bolster the hiring of tax attorneys at the IRS.

What could make Republicans -- from local elected officials to candidates for Presidents and every level of government in between -- propose such tax madness?

I'm guessing it's something they're smoking.

Cards stun Rangers and force Series to Game 7 (Reuters)

ST. LOUIS (Reuters) ? David Freese homered in the 11th inning to cap an incredible comeback that lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 10-9 victory over the Texas Rangers early Friday and forced a decisive Game Seven in the World Series.

The never-say-die Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings and two more in the 10th to stay alive before Freese led off the 11th with a 429-foot blast to center that ended the titanic, four-hour 33-minute battle.

Texas had held a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series and were looking to close out the Cardinals.

The entire St. Louis team met Freese at home plate to celebrate the most fantastic World Series finish in recent memory as a frenzied crowd at Busch Stadium roared in delight.

"Man that was incredible," said Freese, who also tied the game with two outs in the ninth with a two-run triple that got over the head of rightfielder Nelson Cruz. "I was glad I had a chance. We fought back."

"That's the character of this team ... we're not going anywhere. We will fight to the end," added Freese, whose jersey was torn off by team mates as they celebrated at home plate as if they had won the Fall Classic.

The tumultuous late innings raised and shattered hopes twice for the Rangers, who were on the brink of claiming the first World Series crown in their 51 years of existence.

"It's not that easy to win a world championship," said Texas manager Ron Washington, whose team lost the World Series last year in five games to the San Francisco Giants.

"You've got to give them credit. They fought tonight. They came back, and they won the ball game."

LATE LEAD

Back-to-back home runs by Adrian Beltre and Nelson Cruz in the seventh inning gave Texas a late lead after an early see-saw struggle that produced four unearned runs between the teams on some bizarre fielding errors during the chilly night.

Freese tied it with his triple to right off Rangers closer Neftali Feliz, but Texas bounced right back when Josh Hamilton, who had struggled at the plate in the series with a strained groin, walloped the first pitch he saw in the 10th from reliever Jason Motte for a two-run homer and a 9-7 lead.

The Cardinals, who overcame a 10- game deficit in the last month of Major League Baseball's regular season to claim a wildcard playoff berth on the final day, stormed back again with two runs in the 10th, the tying run scoring on a single by Lance Berkman.

With both teams running out of pitchers, Jake Westbrook came on as the Cardinals' seventh pitcher of the game to pitch a scoreless 11th, and Mark Lowe took the mound for Texas in the bottom half.

Lowe, the eighth Texas pitcher, faced just one batter as Freese put his name into World Series lore with a blast that capped one of the greatest finishes in a Fall Classic game.

"We never quit trying," said St. Louis manager Tony La Russa. "I know that's kind of corny, but the fact is we never quit trying."

ERROR RIDDEN

The game, postponed Wednesday due to the threat of a rain storm, saw sloppy play on both sides with Texas committing two errors and the Cardinals making three.

Texas scored a run in the first off St. Louis starter Jaime Garcia, and the Cardinals jumped in front with two in their half of the inning on a home run to right by Berkman against Rangers starting pitcher Colby Lewis.

The Rangers tied it in the second and went ahead with an unearned run in the fourth. The Cardinals tied it 3-3 with an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the fourth.

Another unearned run for Texas in the fifth and for St. Louis in the sixth made it 4-4 before the Rangers' power show set up the wild finish.

"It's incredible to be a part of this," said Freese. "There's so many different ways to win a ball game, and we kept battling and sneaked this one out tonight."

The hard-fought game weighed on some of the players. Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday deeply bruised the pinky finger of his right hand sliding into third base and could be out for Game Seven.

Cruz strained his right groin and Mike Napoli twisted his ankle for Texas.

Juggling the pitching, considering all the work done by the relievers, will be another challenge for the managers in the climactic Game Seven in St. Louis Friday.

Some vaunted D's surprisingly bad

Steelers, Jets, Patriots, Bears haven't been able to live up to reputations

Image: Pittsburgh Steelers v Arizona CardinalsGetty Images

The Steelers' defense has been surprisingly porous this season.

ANALYSIS

updated 11:00 a.m. ET Oct. 27, 2011

Mike Tanier

If you are a fan of hard-hitting, well-played defense ? sacks, interceptions, goal-line stands and third-down stuffs ? you may be tempted to sit down to watch this week?s Steelers-Patriots game.

You may be better off renting a time machine and going back to see them play in 2005.

The Steelers' defense isn?t quite what it used to be. The Patriots defense isn?t even close. And they are not the only teams coasting on their defensive reputations. The Bears have become Monsters of the Mildly Middling. The Jets, while pretty good at stopping opponents, are only half as good as they claim to be.

Here?s a breakdown of four teams with winning records, great defensive aspirations and serious flaws that undercut their hard-hitting reputations. Much of the statistical analysis comes from Football Outsiders, whose DVOA statistic analyzes every play by down, distance, quarter and field zone, taking us past slobberknocker clich?s and deep into what each team does right, and wrong.

Bears
Reputation: Hard-hitting, disciplined heirs to Dick Butkus and Mike Singletary, led by Brian Urlacher and the Cover-2 wizardry of coach Lovie Smith.

Reality: Unexcitingly average unit with red-zone troubles and an inability to stop big-time receivers.

The Skinny: Urlacher is still great, with three interceptions, a fumble recovery and four tackles for a loss this year, but the Bears rank as an almost perfectly average defense according to Football Outsiders. (They actually earn a 0.0 DVOA percentage, which is FO-speak for ?dead center.? It is hard to be that perfect.) Part of the Bears? problem is that they make life too easy for opponents in goal-to-go situations, allowing six touchdowns in eight opportunities. A bigger problem may be their inability to shut down elite receivers. Calvin Johnson, Steve Smith, Greg Jennings and Roddy White combined for 31 catches and 491 yards in four games against the Bears. Those guys are going to make a play or two, but they have to be held below 123 yards each. The Bears allowed 110 points in one four-game stretch. Neither Butkus nor Singletary would approve.

Patriots
Reputation: Chess pieces for Bill Belichick to deploy with Deep Blue precision, capable of tricking unprepared quarterbacks into four-interception days and stepping on an opponents? chest once the Patriots' offense knocks them over.

Reality: Where have you been? The Patriots' defense has been fading for years. This year, it ranks 26th in the league in yards allowed, and 28th in DVOA.

The Skinny: The Patriots have the worst first down offense in the NFL: opponents average 5.0 yards per rush and an awful 10.3 yards per pass on first down. Opponents have little fear of the Devin McCourty-Kyle Arrington-Leigh Bodden secondary, and the pass rush is not compensating. The Patriots have recorded just 10 sacks, even though opponents are passing all the time.

The Patriots do have some tricks up their sleeves. Their offense moves the ball so well that opponents are always pinned in their own territory, with average starting field position on the 23-yard line (worst in the NFL). The Patriots' defense also has a knack for red-zone stops, as the Chargers will tell you. Still, do not mistake this for a ?bend-don?t-break? defense. It is more of a ?bend, crack, splinter, and hope the offense scores over 30 points? defense.

Jets
Reputation: Rex Ryan?s marauding pirates, a danger to themselves and others, blitzing quarterbacks into the fetal position while banishing receivers to Revis Island.

Reality: The pass defense really is almost as good as advertised. (A birthday cake covered in diamonds, delivered by the ladies of Pan Am, couldn?t live up to the Jets advertising). The run defense, however, is mediocre, and saying that the defense gets better as the game goes on is a nice way of pointing out that it is pretty bad in the first quarter.

The Skinny: As usual, Darrelle Revis and his cohorts are doing an excellent job of eliminating top receivers from the opponents? game plans. Vincent Jackson had just one catch on eight passes last week, Anquan Bolding caught just one pass for the Ravens and while Brandon Marshall caught six passes two weeks ago, Revis returned one pass to Marshall 100 yards for a touchdown. The Jets rank 18th in the NFL in run defense according to DVOA, and poor play against the run cost them the Raiders game. Like their offense, the Jets' defense has trouble with slow starts. The Cowboys, Raiders, and Patriots all scored touchdowns on their opening drives, and even the Dolphins managed an early field goal. With their offense sputtering out of the gate and the defense taking its time to get settled, the Jets are always in danger of falling behind early.

Steelers
Reputation: Angry linebackers blitzing from all angles, Troy Polamalu everywhere at once and a run defense as stout as a bank vault door.

Reality: You can run against the Steelers. Unless you are Tarvaris Jackson or Blaine Gabbert, you can drop to pass without fear of being picked off or turned into coleslaw.

The Skinny: Ten of the Steelers' 17 sacks came against Jackson and Gabbert, two of the league?s favorite pi?atas. The Steelers have intercepted just two passes, a shocking total for a team that has faced Jackson, Gabbert, Kevin Kolb and the Kerry Collins-Curtis Painter Project. The Steelers have allowed just 108 rushing yards per game, but even that figure is high when you realize their opponents are often playing from behind. Arian Foster and Ray Rice combined for 262 rushing yards in the Steelers' two losses, and Maurice Jones-Drew gained 96 yards and kept the Jaguars game close even though he may as well have been the only player on the field.

If an opponent with a good quarterback can build a small lead, they can drive the football right through the Steelers? abdomen. Look for the Patriots to try it on Sunday: if their own defense does not turn a former defensive duel into a game of playground basketball.

(AP) ? Mitt Romney became a candidate Monday for the New Hampshire Republican primary.

The former Massachusetts governor's formal filing with New Hampshire's top election official was little more than a photo opportunity for a man who has been running for president ? formally and informally ? for the better part of the last five years. But his visit to the state capital offered a reminder of the huge stakes at play for Romney in New Hampshire, which is expected to host the nation's first Republican presidential primary in less than 80 days.

Friends and foes alike agree that his political future depends upon a win here. It won't guarantee the Republican nomination, but a loss in a state where he enjoys strong natural advantages may very well lead to defeat.

Romney's recent dominance in local polls only adds to lofty expectations here.

The former Massachusetts governor has led the crowded Republican field by no fewer than 18 points ? and as many as 32 points ? this month among New Hampshire voters.

"As long as he wins, I think he'll be fine," said Alan S. Glassman, chairman of the Belknap County Republican Committee.

A second-place finish four years ago helped sink Romney's first White House bid. But a simple win in 2012 may not be enough ? according to his rivals, anyway. They're pushing the notion that a victory by anything less than double digits amounts to a symbolic loss in New Hampshire, where Romney enjoys a summer home, near-universal name recognition and a ballooning network of prominent supporters, some of whom have been working on his behalf for years.

New Hampshire is also the only early voting state to allow independents to participate in the Republican primary. That's good news for Romney's chances here, as he has struggled to win over some conservative activists who are more prominent in places like Iowa and South Carolina.

"Governor Romney has been campaigning in New Hampshire for over half a decade. He is literally a resident of the state," said Tim Miller, a spokesman for former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman and a Romney rival for the nomination. "It's impossible to overstate his expectations."

Welcome to the ever-spinning world of presidential politics, where a win is sometimes a loss and second place can represent both victory and failure. Romney's top advisers addressed the New Hampshire expectations challenge on Monday, largely downplaying the relevance of early polling in a state known for voters that break late.

"We have to win this state, and we intend to win this state," said Tom Rath, a Romney adviser during the first and second campaigns. "We never stopped working, some of us, after we lost the last one. We stayed at it and now it's bearing fruit."

A veteran Republican operative, Rath described expectations associated with strong poll numbers as "a good problem to have," noting that momentum is generally paramount in presidential politics.

"What you can't do anymore is deny the existence of public polls. They're out there. Those of us that are close to it don't ignore them, but also realize they're ephemeral and they can change very quickly," he said. "You know there's an inevitable closing of the numbers that will occur. It happens in every election and it will happen in this one."

Romney got a big boost this weekend after announcing the endorsement of former New Hampshire Gov. John H. Sununu, who was at Romney's side when Romney filed the paperwork to get his name on the ballot at the State House Monday.

"I hope it takes this time," Romney said of his second run at the presidency.

Sununu, a former chief of staff in the first Bush White House, laughed off talk of high expectations tied to big leads in the polls.

"Look, would you rather be behind? Whenever you're in a campaign that's behind you try and set your opponent's expectations high," he said. "Primaries are cycles ? they go up and they go down ? as long as we're up on primary day, that's all that counts."

The New Hampshire presidential primary will likely be scheduled for Jan. 10 ? just 11 weeks away.

'Rogue' man-eating sharks actually want whales

After the attack on an American diver by a great white shark off the coast of Australia, the rumor mill is swilling with talk of a "rogue man-eating shark" that developed a taste for humans, killing three men over the last two months.

The most recent attack happened on Saturday when a great white shark attacked and killed American diver George Thomas Wainwright. Two previous attacks on humans by great whites have occurred in the last two months, one killing an Australian swimmer on Oct. 10 and the other a body boarder who was lethally attacked on Sept. 4.?

Australian waters usually see about one fatal shark attack per year; but these waters are the primary home of the great white shark, a large species that can grow up to 20 feet long. Last year, 14 unprovoked shark attacks on humans were reported in Australia, only one of which was fatal.

Scientists say the recent attacks probably came from three separate sharks."There's whales moving by that coastline at this time of the year, and the white sharks follow," George Burgess, a researcher at the University of Florida and curator of the International Shark Attack File, which catalogs shark attacks around the world. "The chance of an individual shark being involved in all three of these incidences is astronomically low. They travel 40 to 50 miles a day." [ Image Gallery: Great White Sharks ]

Sharks gone rogue
Rogue sharks, typified by the shark in "Jaws," are thought to repeatedly attack humans, though such behavior is abnormal for sharks.

"The theory of a 'rogue' shark is unlikely, sometimes a single shark may be responsible for subsequent attacks done in the same area, in a clustered pattern," Fabio Hazin, a researcher at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco in Brazil, told LiveScience in an email.

"This, however, tends to be more a consequence of the shark and human beings being close together than to a vicious nature of some shark specimens."

One example of such a rogue, the only that Burgess has seen in his 40 years of cataloging shark attacks, happened in Egypt last year. A ship of imported sheep from New Zealand headed to Egypt had been dropping their dead along the way. This lured a shark to the shore, where it attacked five people, killing one.

"That was a very different species and different ecological situation," Burgess told LiveScience. "It was a once in a lifetime experience for myself, after 40 years as a keeper of shark attacks."

A rogue white? Not so fast.
Australia's great whites are currently in the midst of their annual migration (they follow the whale migration paths up the western Australia coast), which would bring them into contact with humans. Three different sharks, following the same path up the coast and passing the same human-infested bathing and boating areas, are likely responsible for the recent attacks Burgess said.

"This is a very unlikely candidate for one to have stayed around and gotten the taste for humans, particularly in the case of the white shark, which is so highly migratory," Burgess said.

There were several possible reasons why shark attacks in the area might be higher than normal, Burgess said. It's possible that changes in climate may be shifting migration patterns, bringing sharks and humans closer together. Warmer temperatures would also bring more humans into the water. [ 10 Incredible Animal Migrations ]

I'd rather win the lottery
Internationally, the number of shark fatalities is down, though the actual number of attacks is rising; shark attacks hit a global 10-year high in 2010 with 115 human-shark incidents that year. That increase is probably due to increased human presence in shark territory. Only six of these incidents ended in a dead human, though.

"We should always be cautious when entering into the sea, since it is an environment different from the one we live in," Hazin said. "We should not forget that drowning kills thousands and thousands more people every year than shark attacks."

The shark attacks in Australia have prompted calls to kill off any sharks in the area, which Premier Colin Barnett is said to be considering. Researchers are against such a shark hunt, since there is no way to know which shark or sharks are responsible for the human deaths without killing them and cutting open their stomachs.

"The region will be better off if the resources being given to hunt the killer shark would be used to study the situation ? and reduce the chances of it happening again," Burgess said. "The only answer we are going to find is if we scientifically study the situation carefully and understand better the movement patterns of the sharks."

Juninho lifts Galaxy past Motagua in CONCACAF play

updated 3:33 a.m. ET Oct. 21, 2011

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras - Juninho's goal in the 29th minute lifted the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 1-0 win over Club Motagua on Thursday night, clinching a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.

With the teams trading chances, the Brazilian midfielder put Los Angeles ahead with a looping shot that went over the head of Motagua goalkeeper Donaldo Morales. The goal was Juninho's sixth in all competitions for the Galaxy and his fifth from beyond the box.

"We were fortunate to get a great goal by Juninho, and our team understood how to protect the lead in the 2nd half and did a great job," head coach Bruce Arena said. "I'm really pleased and proud of our team and I have nothing but the greatest respect for Motagua, they came out and played us hard tonight."

Motagua had a number of chances on net, but goalkeeper Josh Saunders preserved the win.

Los Angeles earned the victory without Landon Donovan or Robbie Keane. Donovan began the game on the bench due to a nagging quad injury and finished with 29 minutes of play while Keane remained out due to an adductor strain.

The Galaxy finished tied atop Group A with Mexican club Morelia and Corsta Rican club Alajuelense, but Los Angeles got first place due to the goal differential tiebreaker.

"We knew that this tournament was going to be difficult, but we're fortunate because we have a lot of guys that have been through a lot of these games and know what to expect," said Donovan. "It was not an easy game tonight and our guys did a great job."

While the Galaxy were received with hostility in away from home in their first two road matches, it was much different in Honduras. The Estadio Nacional was peppered with Galaxy jerseys as well as those of Donovan and David Beckham. It was Beckham, who received the warmest reception among the crowd receiving scores of cheers throughout the match.

"It's been a really good trip, we've been treated really well by the people here and been looked after very well," Beckham said. "We want to thank them as a country and as a city because the reception after the stadium was a great atmosphere and a great atmosphere to play in as well. ... It makes it even more special when you go home with three points."

In the quarters, the Galaxy could face Salvadorian club Isidro Metapan, Toronto FC or the Seattle Sounders. Regardless of the opponent, the Galaxy were extremely pleased to reach the next round.

"It's important to advance because of who we are and what team we play for," said Beckham. "It was a big game tonight and we showed our character winning 1-0 and we're very happy to be through to the next round because when you play for a club like the Galaxy it's expected of you."

Apple Stores To Close Briefly To Mark Jobs' Death (NewsFactor)

Apple will close some retail stores for at least an hour on Wednesday in honor of co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs. The closing will come at the same time as a celebration of Jobs' life that will be taking place at the company's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters.

Jobs died at age 56 on Oct. 5, following a fight with pancreatic cancer. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, store employees have been notified of the closing because of a private event, but they were not specifically informed that it related to the passing of Jobs. The Journal cited sources "familiar with the matter."

'Incredible Things'

The celebration of Jobs' life on Wednesday had been announced to Apple employees via an e-mail from CEO Tim Cook, according to The Journal. The e-mail said Apple intended "to take time to remember the incredible things Steve achieved in his life and the many ways he made our world a better place." According to the newspaper, the occasion at Apple headquarters will be three hours long.

On Oct. 7, a private funeral was held for the Apple visionary, and there was a large, private memorial service on Sunday at Stanford University.

The Sunday service included ex-President Bill Clinton, ex-Vice President Al Gore, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Google co-founder Larry Page, singer Bono, News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch, actor Tim Allen, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, Dell founder Michael Dell, Adobe co-founders John Warnock and Chuck Geschke, and others.

Jobs will continue to be remembered in countless large and small ways, not the least of which will be a new authorized biography and, reportedly, a major feature film.

Sony Pictures is negotiating for a seven-figure purchase of the movie rights to the coming authorized biography, "Steve Jobs." The new book, whose release was moved up from November to this month following the Apple co-founder's passing, is written by Walter Isaacson, former chairman of CNN and ex-managing editor for Time magazine. Isaacson's previous biographies include Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein.

'Roller-Coaster Life'

Immediately following Jobs' death, the as-yet-unpublished book shot from 437th to first on Amazon's bestseller list, based on pre-orders.

According to the publisher, Simon & Schuster, the book presents "a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing."

The book is based on more than 40 interviews with Jobs and over 100 conversations with family members, friends and colleagues. It's the first book on the legendary CEO that had his cooperation. The movie reportedly would be produced by Mark Gordon, whose other films include Saving Private Ryan, The Day After Tomorrow, Source Code, and 2012.

Simon & Schuster said Jobs had neither control over what Isaacson wrote nor even the right to read it prior to publication.

Motorola intros Elite Sliver and Elite Flip Bluetooth headsets with NFC pairing (video)

Bluetooth headsets are normally the province of businesspeople so important they can't spare the energy to hold a phone to their ears or, perhaps, folks who just want to play CIA agent. If you find yourself in either category, Motorola's newest offerings will put what passes for a smile on your serious businessperson face. The outfit just took the wraps off two Elite series headsets, both equipped with NFC pairing, so one tap 'twixt phone and earpiece will have you ready to simultaneously drive and talk. You'll also get integration with MyMotospeak, now capable of dictating text messages as well as hearing them read to you, HD-Audio, CrystalTalk noise cancellation and a roaming distance of 300 feet. While the Flip looks the part of your typical earpiece, the Sliver (pictured above) has decidedly more futuristic digs. Both will be available on October 24th with the Flip costing $100 and the Sliver fetching an extra $30 for its avant-garde design. We've got PR after the break along with a demo video -- because who doesn't love watching cartoon characters explain how NFC works?

Samsung seeks iPhone 4S ban in Australia, Japan

(AP) ? Samsung Electronics is asking Japanese and Australian courts to block sales of Apple's new iPhone 4S in those countries.

The preliminary injunctions Samsung filed Monday in Tokyo District Court and the Federal Court in Australia are part of an intensifying patent battle between the smartphone giants.

Samsung says Apple Inc. continues to violate its patent rights and "free ride on our technology."

Samsung is also appealing an Australian court's decision last week to temporarily ban sales of Samsung's new Galaxy tablet computer. Apple accused Samsung of copying the iPad and iPhone and violating Apple's patents.

Samsung says it's also asking a Japanese court to immediately bar sales of the iPhone 4 and iPad 2.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Signs that Europe will finally take bold steps to curb its financial crisis sent stocks higher Wednesday. The battered euro also soared against the dollar and the Japanese yen.

European Commission President Jose-Manuel Barroso presented a plan to strengthen European banks and lower Greece's debt. It's being seen as the strongest effort yet to address the region's debt crisis.

Separately, a Slovakian opposition party leader said that country's political parties have agreed to approve a deal to strengthen Europe's financial rescue program. Slovakia's parliament blocked the deal Tuesday, setting back efforts to free up more funds for indebted European countries and banks. All 16 of the other countries that use the euro have approved the measure.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 115 points, or 1 percent, to 11,532 at 12:15 p.m. Walt Disney Co. jumped 4 percent, the most of the 30 companies that make up the index.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 15, or 1.3 percent, to 1,210. Banks and financial stocks had the biggest gains. Those companies would have the most to lose if European banks suffer big losses because of a default by the Greek government. A default would cause the value of Greek bonds held by banks in the U.S. and Europe to plunge in value, weakening their balance sheets and making it harder for them to lend. European leaders are working to shore up those banks so they can withstand the impact.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 30, or 1.2 percent, to 2,613.

The euro rose to $1.38 against the U.S. dollar from $1.37 late Tuesday. The euro has fallen in recent months as Europe struggled to get control of its debt crisis. Treasury prices fell and their yields rose as investors bought riskier assets like stocks instead of U.S. government debt. The yield on the benchmark 10-year note rose to 2.21 percent from 2.16 percent late Tuesday.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. rose 1.8 percent. The giant retailer told a group of Wall Street analysts that its campaign to reverse a two-year sales slump is starting to work. Sales at stores open at least a year have risen for three straight months.

Liz Claiborne Inc. rose 31.2 percent after the company said it is selling its namesake brand and several others in an attempt to reverse years of losses. Liz Claiborne hasn't had an annual profit since 2006.

U.S. companies have begun to release their third-quarter earnings reports, and so far the results have been mixed. PepsiCo Inc. rose 3.2 percent after the company said its income rose because of stronger sales of snacks and beverages, especially overseas.

Alcoa Inc. dropped 3.1 percent after the aluminum maker reported earnings that were weaker than analysts expected. A 12 percent drop in aluminum prices in the July-September period dragged down its results.
